First scratch on my first watch. Need your opinions please.

Haha I'm sorry for nagging about the dent. It's all I look at now when I wind my watch. Hairline scratches, I wouldnt mind. But because it is a dent on the corner I just can't unsee it. Might just try to blend it with cape cod very carefully. If nothing happens after slight application, I will stop and give up.

Get one of the 4 sided nail files. The spongy ones and use #4

Do not use 1, 2 or 3 until you get a bigger dent or scratch.

This is your best bet 👍

You mean to say that Rolex has exaggerated the scratch resistance of its proprietary, made in its own foundry (by elves, no doubt) 904L steel? It WILL scratch? OMG!!! I hope this doesn’t get out to the public. It could result in Rolex stainless steel sports watches being readily available at - GASP - retail price!!! Angels and ministers of grace, defend us! 🙄

Shocking isnt it! When you cant even trust comersials, whats left to belive in.
Any ways dont tell them I spilled the beans, dont want their hitmen after me.

No one makes knives out of 440 steel anymore 😉

They dont? 440C is a pretty good knife steel, maybe they use a different standard than the american ANSI(?) to make the steel sound cooler. You just cant trust no one these days.🙁

Being a knife maker…..Premium Steels are the hottest thing in knives nowadays.

Wow thats a lot of different steels! I need to read up on this topic. I usualy use carbon steels because they are easier to heat treat. Like 15N20, different spingsteels like 5160 and bearing steel 52100(?). The only Stainless steel knife i got (exept kichen knives) are AEB-L witch I like alot. Easy to sharpen, but that means lower edge retention than Carbonsteels.

Never tried this before, but I'd like to sum up this post if I may:
1. Original poster got a scratch/ding on his timepiece and doesn't know how. He's asking for advice and opinions.
2. The op has received very sage advice, everything from it adds character to wait until your 1st service and even if it bothers you that much, get it fixed.
3. The op is clearly all over the board with his emotions. At first he appears to agree with living with the blemish, to it's all he sees when he puts it on.
4. Metallurgists got involved and Rolex marketing came into question.
5. We are now discussing the different types of steel used in cutlery.
This was just a cursory glance over 6 pages of information....I'm certain I've left a few details out. Feel free to correct me.

My reference is Machinery's Handbook 16th Ed 1959. (Stolen from my late father.) As everything that I've been involved in designing has served out its intended life and been demolished or superseded it's good enough for me. Don't need to read any more 🙄

Oh, BTW Edgardo, I'll pull out some photos of the damage I've done to my first new watch through over 50 years of abuse (servicing rally cars, foredeck sail changing and worse) if you like. Still tells the time, chronograph still works -- I can now afford to get it professionally serviced of course. And the scars equal my own, I won't provide photos but I can tell you how I got 'em. Except the ones acquired while drunk of course.....

We, the tool watch folk, are in the Phaedrus camp -- wear it, live with the scars, do what is necessary to keep it functioning properly.

His riding buddy with the new BMW moto obsesses over minor problems and how to solve them. Fix insecure handlebars with a bit of fizzy-drink can as a shim? Arrgghhh! No, back to BMW with it!

[*] I do think Pikiweedia's contributors rather over-analyse it, but then I am just a rude mechanical 😁

Next topic: why do cats prefer aluminum to 904L steel? I think that it has something to do with the strength to weight ratio. 😗

That's awesome, free of charge? How well did they do? Where they able to remove the dents?
Yes free of charge, they did an amazing job, removed 99% of the dent and all of the scratch and really only visible with a loupe or very, very close inspection. The lug is still sharp and not rounded.

I think we need some data here, in evidence. How many cats did you test? Were they double blind tests? How many could tell aluminium from steel with one lick of the tongue? (I can, cats being superior beings could probably tell the grade too!)

Photos of the watch I will do, many have been on OF before. Photos of damage to flesh I won't. For example one crash of bicycle as a teenager needed stitches to repair corner of eye, nose, and 7 (count 'em!) to upper lip. That's why I have had a moustache for 60 years since.

Sounds great! How long did it take to get your watch back from Omega?
They literally did it while I waited, I think I went and grabbed a coffee, came back and it was done.
