Why should that upset you, it is a franken anyway. No one can see the inside back case stamp.

Movement, case,caseback,bezel,dial,hands

Apologies but the dial does not look genuine. It is definitely not original to the watch and it also does not look like any of the known service dials made for the 6538. That makes be suspicious about the hands, which are not the correct length, and then the rest of it.

(Edited to correct the wrong ref number I typed in haste.)

This appears to be a big crown reference. Are the dials the same?

Thanks @Dan S , I was typing in haste and put the wrong thing down as I was talking to my friend about his 5508 this morning; now corrected. As far as I'm aware there are no 6538 service dials that look like this, unless it's something recent that their new Heritage Dept made but those services cost >10k so doubtful. The lug thickness is also off among other things.

Here's a nice article from BBWM on the production dials - https://www.blackbird-watchmanual.com/manual/icons/the-rolex-reference-6538-submariner/

A quick google search for "fake 6538 dials" also brings you here, which looks close to but not exactly the same as the OP's watch, and is very far from the typical service dial appearance (pictured below, from HQM): https://www.hontreplicawatch.me/produit/rolex-vintage-sub-ref-6538-big-crown-james-bond-a-2836/

Unfortunately I think the whole watch is fake. I don’t mean to put a downer on the OPs post but you can’t post Rolex or any watches on forums which are blatantly unoriginal and not expect people to correct you.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, all I can say is I am happy with the watch, the serial number and the movement checked out so that is good enough for me.

Not going to gatekeep what makes you happy.

Disclaimer for other forum members who read this thread in the future: the visible parts of the OPs watch aren’t genuine. If you see one like it and the seller is asking more than $150, don’t buy it unless you want to lose your shirt.

Serial number isn't an issue but no way of removing the back.

Update: The appraiser said that the movement, case, caseback, crown and bezel are authentic. The dial hands and bezel insert are not, they are aftermarket parts. Disappointing but still ok with me.

Do you know how they came to this conclusion IE what benchmarks they used and what their level of expertise is, in the vast minefield of vintage Rolex?

Comparing yours on the left against a genuine 6538

It is easy to see the lug thickness and shape/length/taper of yours is wrong, the crown looks nothing alike, and the bezel is reminiscent of those fake vintage SM300 kits where the bezel teeth are all wrong/too sharp/pronounced. Your movement may be genuine but no-one here has seen it, so beyond that, I agree with others above that your watch is fake. By all means, continue to be "still ok with me" with it; however, considering you purchased this watch under the sellers description of having "original service parts" (dial/hands & more) only to find out the dial & hands are fake, which other members had pointed out despite you not agreeing- I highly encourage you to investigate your piece further, ask for help, and be open to discussion with members that have years of hands on experience and knowledge in the world of vintage Rolex.

Time now to relax and enjoy it. If I wanted something perfect, I'd buy new...and still could end up less than 100% happy. With vintage watches, things break or wear out or just get tired looking, and someone over the years changes them. And then we come along and as the new owner, we make it whatever we want it to be. If I find someone's name engraved on the back of a case, it doesn't bother me at all...rather it reminds me that I am just another stopping off place in the watch's life.

Sure but here, it is not just some scratches, an engraving, a bezel insert... there are so many fake parts for vintage Rolex and some guys are really putting some work into it. Not always a problem if you need some nonexisting part to complete a good watch but I fear that this is beyond a case of "my watch has a few non original parts". Also, real money is probably involved.
