Wow... These guys are getting good... A quick search turned up a lot of these. Had to pull out my own watches to compare but once I identified what to look for the fakes became obvious and easy to spot.

These fakes are getting good, it's scary. I know to look for the black balance spring, and that's about it. I would have totally thought these were real.

You want to be safe buy brand new.

Not neccesarily. I assume it's enough to use your brain and some common sense.

Good luck if you think it is that simple. These fakes are getting more and more sophisticated even experienced people find it hard to tell the difference.

Be VERY careful and if in doubt ask around.

Contacted the seller to let him know it was a replica and even explained why it was not real. This was his reply...

"Thank you for your concern but we're very confident with what we have. Plus,we specialize in watches for a living."

the answer should have been :

"Thank you for your concern but we're very confident with what we have built here. Plus,we specialize in fake watches for a living, and so far it works pretty well."

It wouldn't be to difficult for a "experienced person" to spot a fake 8500/8400. Might be a different story with a Sub...

This is a useful reference image for orientation of specific elements of the movement (it's from the original Omega catalogue listing). Look at the position of the words "ONE" and "TWO" for example, compared to the latest e-Bay fake pointed out by @dsio ; the words are off by almost two full hour-positions with respect to the dial.

Yea I've had that a couple of times too trying to let these guys know in the past, please use the report to eBay button to let them know, I think when they get enough alerts they usually take it down.

The reaction is concerning but not hugely surprising as people are a bit in denial on one hand and on the other, its like a hot potato that nobody wants to end up holding as you're never going to be able to reverse all the deals to its origin. Someone is going to have to stick his hand up and say yes it belongs in the bin and take the loss, its just that nobody wants that, and sometimes people who are normally legit even make the very serious mistake of trying to offload it and make it someone else's problem.

That's why these are such an absolute cancer that people need to be very aware of.

Um ... just curious, but when did you "have to" own a fake watch? 😒

My question exactly - did someone hold a gun to his head to force him to wear it?

Also funny to describe a thread "dragging on and on" that he brought back to life after it being dormant for almost 9 months...

Removed his post and another quoting it as links to fake websites is not acceptable.

Fakes are getting unbelievably precise at this point. I for one (with my untrained eye) could honestly not tell the difference without spending minutes comparing them side by side.
It's so sad to see and sadly impressive at the same time.

I myself would never feel confident in buying a watch, any watch, from a dealer I do not know. Yes, I love horology, but my eye is not trained for it so I could easily be fooled by a good fake. It's not like 8 years ago when I hit Saigon and looked at and held dozens of fake Omega and Rolex watches, all of which were clearly fake to my eyes. I was just in China and found a guy with a fake Datejust that felt so real it was frightening.

The fakes have gotten scary good! I'm curious how many people are knowingly buying fakes vs. the people who've been fooled.
