Face and bezel size: FOIS vs Moonwatch

I’m looking to buy a Speedmaster. And I’m trying to decide between the FOIS vs the Moonwatch.

Everyone talks about how the FOIS “wears smaller”, but no one talks about watch face and bezel size. it appears that the watch faces and the bezels are identical in size on the FOIS and Moonwatch. And these are really the main things that determine how big a watch looks on one’s wrist. Bezel size in particular.

Are they not exactly the same size on these watches?

To answer your question, yes. Also, the pro probably wears smaller because the lugs are more curved towards the wrist and the lug to lug is a little shorter.

They keep mentioning the 39.7 case diameter but I’d venture to say that this measurement is completely irrelevant for the FOIS, as the case is actually narrower than the bezel.

The diameter of the bezel is 39.7mm on both watches. The pro case is 42mm because of the crown guards. I believe the Fois case is 38.6mm, but I could be wrong.

However, on the wrist you don't notice the extra case width on the pro because your eye will focus on the face and dial, so visually they look very similar in size.

Honestly, the crown guards bit I always found funny. Removing them doesn't reduce the size of the case in any meaningful way (other than for how you measure with a caliper!). Whether the areas between the crown/pusher have metal in them or not is irrelevant.

I suppose I’ll have to look at them side-by-side at the dealer, but I’d be curious to know the measurements. Unfortunately, employees at the dealer won’t know that kind of thing.

Either way, they’re both really nice watches and I’m having a heck of a time choosing between them. One thing is for sure: I only want to buy one of them.

You said it yourself, the dial and bezel are the same so I don’t know why you’d need to measure anything. Note this isn’t true for the Trilogy model or original 2915. There the all metal bezel was skinnier. But not with the FOIS. With the Speedmaster of all flavours cases are measured below the bezel across the mid case diagonally which is why 2 identical bezel watches can be stated as having different case sizes. Read back on the threads on the original 2012 FOIS here. This point has been debated many times before.

As an owner of the former FOiS and a current Speedmaster, I can assure you the dial and bezel dimensions are identical. I tried the new FOiS on last week and compared to my old one — the new lugs are just a hair longer and flatter, which made it wear even bigger on my wrist — and definitely bigger across the wrist than the standard Pro.

I can't really tell any difference when I wear them back to back.

I have both. They are ‘different’ but the ‘same’…. 6.5” wrist, and they both fit perfectly! Difficult to get the angles/lens-distortion to be the same in these photos- but you get the idea. FOIS has longer lugs, but the elegance of the watch and the smaller dial make it feel as small as my White Dial Speedy.

Same dial and dimensions, but don't be fooled: the FOIS wears larger than the standard speedy due to the lug size differences.

Maybe it's my experience with my very small wrists - I definitely notice the longer lugs on the FOIS and it wears bigger. The Ed White has the same "problem" for me.

Mine is small also, look at my avatar, the case is my whole wrist.

If you're happy, then great! But I would wager most people would consider a watch too big if the lugs went past the wrist.

You should see what my Seamaster and Black Bay chrono look like. Huge but I love them. But my 38mm speedmaster triple calendar fits better.
