McLaren just sold their Woking headquarters for £170 million in a lease back deal.
Really? They are that short on cash? I knew it was for sale but I thought they would down grade offices not go into a leaseback.

Austin is really pretty great, there have been a lot of really poor US tracks since most of the good ones are not suitable safety wise for F1 (though F1 at Laguna Seca would be pretty epic) and I don’t hold much hope for Miami being any better

Miami is likely to replace a European GP. It is not yet settled but, apparently, it would be Barcelona.
For sure it won't be Austin. FOM are trying to expand in the US, and are already discussing a third race at Indy.
And F1 teams are saying that it must bring more money to them than what it costs to travel across the ocean

Far from being 2021, but the ACM is broadcasting the Monaco Historic GP on youtube - only 1 race left sadly, but what a show was given by the 1961-1965 and 1966-1972 races!

I think this safety angle is completely made up, especially compared to a race like Miami. Miami would require the track, grandstands etc be built each year for 10 years. No way that is cheaper than doing a one time upgrade at a permanent facility.

Yea but the upgrade at Laguna Seca would be removing the corkscrew and changing some of the elevation changes that could cause an F1 car to be airborn.

It’s like Mount Panorama in Australia, the entire mountain section from Skyline onwards is far too narrow and the elevation changes through corners are not really suitable. The Nordschleife similarly doesn’t have the ability to be upgraded without changing it negatively for all other uses

While we round the corner into race week
He’s led more laps than any other driver in F1 history, can’t argue with that lol

Jean Alesi had a rough day at the office with Niki Lauda’s Ferrari at the Monaco Historic GP. Kinda looked like a blowout?

They said he missed a gear shift which caused him to lose control

Ah, it was that sudden veer to the right that had me wondering.

The new F1 news of the day: Three races this season, two in Europe (Silverstone & Monza) and one in Asia or the Americas will have qualifying sprint races rather than normal quali, so the 100km spring race will decide the starting order and 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Qualifying for the sprint race will take place after free practice 1 on Friday.

Could be interesting though not quite as messy or grid-upsetting as a reverse grid sprint race since they’ll be in their normal order at the start. It does mean there could be more of a teams element to qualifying with this method and the risk of a crash or penalty during the sprint impacting the overall race could be high, reduced practice time drastically too so some teams could be wrong footed on setup (unfortunately likely Haas, Williams, Alfa Romeo since they have the least funding and people back home to work it in the simulators).

It's good they are trying different things. Only way to land on a winning format. Can't wait.

That’s great until Mazepin forgets he’s on cold tires and eliminates half the field.

If only cold tires were the only thing that would make that lad fly off the track backwards. It really brings Andrea de Cesaris to mind and James Hunt’s famous quote “And there’s Andrea de Cesaris having his usual accident”

I wonder how it affects the teams and strategy. Surely it's a big lift to get everything ready and setup right for an extra 'race'. Have they announced what they are doing with tyres?

Agree that you have to try something, but a race to decide who starts the next race? In all probability it will be like the first 25 laps of a normal GP before it's all diced up by strategy/pit stop events. The lead car will bugger off into the normal +2 second lead and everybody else will fall into line astern, petrified of bending something that will compromise them for the main event.

Possibly. But need to keep an open mind. If they put certain rules/restrictions on how those laps are done - may change things. Could be the start of something special. It also gives an extra day of viewing where previously Friday was a waste of time for all but die-hard viewers.
