Awesome drives by both Perez & Russell.

They way it stands now, neither will have any real chance to stand on the podium next year.

Is that the distant sound of wheels turning that I hear?

Russel was impressive today.👍 Sure bottas has had bad luck but all this can be said up to a point. When he needed to make the difference he was never there.

Agree, get rid of him, bring a promising young talent if they don't want to push Hamilton. I'm sure a repeat of Rosberg/Hilton is something they want to avoid. At least the youngster will improve and eventually take the reigns. Hamilton isn't immortal.

Bottas proved today that he is a #2 and imo not worthy of such a racing seat.

Terrible day for Bottas and Albon, great day for Perez and Russel. I hope Russel gets the Mercedes seat next year and Perez is offered the Red Bull.

One of the most entertaining races of the year, if not always for the right reasons.

Hi all

I find the idea that most of you think that after having just signed Bottas again for another year that Mercedes are going to throw all that money away as they are committed to having to pay him that now and then sign another driver at yet more expense. I know F1 teams have lots of money but that idea is just plain ridiculous IMHO. But Perez getting the RB seat at Albon's expense does IMO seem much more likely than many of the other suggestions seen is this thread. As lets face it Perez really does deserve to be in F1 especially after his recent performances and yesterdays outstanding display was even more proof. Last after the first lap due to LeBerc's screw up to finish first shows great skill and drive.

Are you forgetting Sergio Perez also had a contract to drive with Racing Point for 2021 and had brought the funds to save the team after its collapse as Force India? That team swapping him out for Seb seems a far more bizarre turn of events.

There will be a get out clause in his contract, what it costs and wether it is justified or worth it is for Toto to decide.

Great race, with a bit of something for everyone 😀. Mercedes’ pit stops were almost as shambolic as the infamous Haas stops where the same wheel fell off both cars after they left the pits.

It was really intense with such short laps, edge of the seat stuff for both spectators and drivers alike. Nice to see a very unusual podium after a very unusual year...

Ok so yeah Russell showed some real potential.
I would love to see him get a full time seat at Merc and give Hamilton a bit of a challenge perhaps.
Since no one else seems to be doing so....

But how about them Racing Point bois?!

Wouldn't it be fun if RB somehow got their hands on RUS? Won't happen though will it.

Think the idea of giving the 7 times world champ an extra week off and RUS another bang in the Merc would be an excellent idea. Would also let AIT practice his spins more ( very lucky boy with that nose bonk by pit entry). Can anyone shed any light on why a VSC went to FSC for picking up a front wing?

PER to RB seems a no brainer now, ALB has not found his peace inside that helmet, although there were flashes of potential.

Netflix doc this coming season should be entertaining to say the least, they were in the Pink Mercs garage all weekend...

+1 on that.

Marshals on the track picking up debris from the lost wing. SC is slower than VSC and the driver can get messages about where the marshals are and drive to avoid them I would hope.

Hope Russell gets to drive the merc next race too👍
The sc was deployed since there was not a big enough time gap between the cars for the marshalls to step in and get the wing out

Not really. The penalty is small to cancel with Perez. Remember Perez brought money to the team. Bottas is paid by the team.

Surely the penalty is bigger. Not only do you have to buy out his contract you lose the sponsorship deal too.

Unless I am mistaken, the bulk of the money that Perez brings to the team pays his wages, something along the lines of 60% wages, 40% for the team. If someone has more accurate data please correct me.

This is why Perez would be an asset for Williams, he would put money in the pot which they sorely need even after buy out. George unfortunately just brings sheer talent which is why his position in the team is potentially at risk.

Small note.

Russel will never ever get an RB seat. Russel came up in the Mercedes drivers program and will stay with one of the three teams aligned. His a manger is Toto Wolf.

RB only takes drivers from its program. Which is run by Helmut Marko who previously managed the drivers in its program.

Except Albon isn't good enough and they really need a driver for the RB seat. For whatever reason, Marko and Horner both hate Gasly so Gasly is never getting that seat again. That leaves them with the only option of going outside the program if they're going to replace Albon. Pretty much means Perez, Hulk, or another run with Albon with the hopes of him improving.

That race had everything ....started on a high note with Verstappen exiting early and just kept getting better. Crushed for George, he earned it.....but Perez took the opportunity when he could, maybe he will have a ride next year after all.

They hate Gasley? Why? Never heard that.

Ocon was also a Merc driver but is now at Renault. I think Toto is far less likely to let Russell go now, as I think he will certainly be Hams teammate in 2022.
Will Red Bull give Gasly another chance? Or are the perceived safe hands of Perez a more attractive option, with the money savings associated? It would be a departure from the Young drivers program.

If Marko and Horner don’t like Gasly then why keep him? Surely they would have just sacked him.

I think Gasly has more to give than Perez but being Max’s teammate seems to be confidence destroying.

I get the impression Perez is not willing to go anywhere other than Red Bull. He doesn’t want anymore time making up the numbers.

Hate is a strong word but they just don't trust him. They won't promote Gasly no matter what he does or how much he's improved and didn't even consider him for the RB seat to replace Albon.

51% of Redbull is Thai owned. Albon races under the Thai flag. This may have some influence on the decision.
