One of the post race commentators speculated that the Mercs are more than the Pirellis can handle.

I've followed F1 since the late 1970's, I am so bored with the racing at the moment, the potential to overtake is minimal unless tyres are shot on the car in front, circuits appear to be designed to stop overtaking not encourage it, something needs to be done to liven things up, if things don't change soon I may have to resort to watching grass grow on Sunday afternoons to get some excitement.

If F1 was a yawnfest, the Motogp2 & Motogp races were certainly eventful.

It was a rough weekend in general for motorsports. In the FIA F2 race in Barcelona, Sean Gelael suffered a fractured vertebra after a 45G impact with a curb.

The hope is the now 2022 regulations will bring closer racing with the vast reduction of aerodynamic outwash. Should allow the following car a significantly smaller loss of downforce than what we have now. I think the testing showed only a ~15% reduction with the new cars versus something like 55% reduction today

Hi all

Following on from some of the suggestions made from earlier in this thread I can actually think of a few simple changes that IMO would make a real difference and return both competition and excitement to F1.

1) Return to refuelling
For the love of everything holy it's 2020 technology and also safety are so far ahead of where they where I can not accept this can not be achieved safely. It would end cars having to tippy toe around for the first quarter of the race due to carrying such heavy fuel loads and trying to preserve the tyres again due to the extra weight and bad handling. It would allow cars to race as fast as they could and come up with different strategies making racing more exciting.

2) Reduce tyre limitations.
Still require more than one compound to be used per race but no restrictions placed on how many or what type of tyre is available. How can F1 cars race if being restricted and dictated to by tyre choice limits that's not racing its limiting racing just for the sake of it.

3) Equip all F1 cars with the gadgets from Bonds DB5
That will surly liven things up a bit with oil slicks, machine guns and smoke screens and of course would be fair as all cars would have the same chances. Although sitting on pole may not be an advantage any longer.

OK Number 3 isn't for real but the first two are. What does anyone else think? not that we have anyway of influencing anyone that could make changes but fun to think about.

I’d watch if they introduced number 3. As for the other two suggestions, meh.

So Hamilton wins yet another processional race,

I would appreciate if spoilers were not posted until after the race has been broadcast on Terrestrial TV. This was a very unwelcome alert

Confess I am not an avid follower but today was to me one of the most boring in a long time 🙁

Refueling is perfectly safe, it never stopped in endurance racing. There was a vote to bring back refueling a few years back and every team voted against it. I was a fan of it being brought back though

With all due respect, please consider watching the race before you open the thread. Problem solved.

cheers

I finally got around to watching the race last night. There was a little excitement during the first lap as Bottas muffed his start again. I couldn’t tell you much about the rest of the race though as I fell asleep sometime after lap 15. ::facepalm1::

Best parts were Max yelling at his race engineers telling them to stop focusing on Lewis and Seb yelling at his race engineer for doing normal Ferrari strategy. Other than that, this race was a dud but at least it wasn't the French GP of 2019.

There are pros and cons to this. I used to think similar but....

endurance racing has much slower pit stops with limited people over the wall which means more time to refuel And fueling not being the slowest action in the stop. F1 encouraged high speed refueling which can and did lead to accidents.

The only reason to get fueling back is to shake up tactics... but at this point I’m not sure it will that much.

the new tires on the next gen cars in 2021? Or 2022 should help to fix things as they will have a much faster fall of curve and be less heat sensitive. The current tires spec is way to heat sensitive. You can google all the differences, it’s pretty interesting.

2022 for 18" tyres. It was postponed with the new aero regulation. Refuelling was officially banned for cost reduction, not a chance they will bring it back soon...

For me a good start would be:
- car less sensible to aero perturbation (the 2022 regulation seems to go this way)
- Tyres you can actually race, with interesting differences between 2 specs (= at least 2 different strategies could make sense, and "not should I run medium-soft or soft-medium?")
- stop limit innovation with a tight technical regulation. Instead, limit costs with a tight sporting regulation.

Unrelated to the current discussion, but Gasly was burgled when he was racing in Spain. They stole racing helmets, cloths, jewelry, and, as we are in a watch forum: several engraved BRMs and some Tag Heuer...

Yeah, if you hear the drive radio "I need more power give me more power" the teams will allow the drivers to change engine modes or restrict them from doing so to protect the overall life of the engine. Drivers can change modes for the engine to run lean, which will help conserve fuel but lose a little power output. Or "I need more power", they can run more rich, which uses more fuel, which in turn cools the engine a little more, and gives it more power, but will shorten the engine life. I believe they are restricted from racing in qualy mode though.

I think this is a bit out of date, simplistic and back to front. Lean fuel mix actually gives more power than rich, but will increase wear and tear on the engine. The engine has electric power now so maximising how much electrical energy you use, and how much you recover will be a major part of each mode. As they are turbo engines, I expect the boost can also be adjusted? This would also have an impact on reliability.
