Ed White Christmas find

My family & friends knowing I’m a watch enthusiast, often ask me to estimate old watches they find in their attics. And until now it always turned out to be worthless quartz junk.
Therefore when my girlfriend’s stepmother recently asked me to have a look at a watch she found in a drawer, I expected yet another junk piece. How wrong...
It turned out to be a vintage Speedmaster Ed White 1f62e.png

The watch belonged to her now deceased ex husband who was working in the French Army and more specifically on French nuclear weapon testing in Sahara back in the 60s. So the watch certainly has seen a lot.

Here's a few pictures of this tremendous find:

Nice family heirloom!

Did your jaw drop to the floor when you saw this? 😁

The movement is in incredible shape!

That scratched up crystal looks like it’s hiding a beautiful dial

Do you have to marry the girlfriend to get access to the watch? May be worth it, far better than anything my mother-in-law has ever given me! lol

What are your plans for the watch? Hopefully keeping it in the family? Is it getting serviced?

Haha, maybe I should think about it! But I'll have to be quick, the want to sell the Speedmaster...

I wish it could remain in the family but they will most probably service (or rather clean it, I told them to keep as many original parts as possible) it and then sell it. It's a pity..

Indeed, I could not believe my eyes! And then I explained her that, no the battery is not dead, it doesn't have one

The buyer of this watch will probably be a knowledgable collector, and picky about where it is serviced and what is done. They will probably NOT be turned off by the dirty condition, but more likely see it as a plus. Leave it just as it is, take a few more pics, and put it on eBay. I think the family will be very pleasantly surprised by what it brings.
Servicing prior to selling could cost you more than just what is paid for the service.

Why don't you make your family an offer ? Are you the one on behalf of the family to sell it?

This is a good lesson for all of us to hide our watches around the house away from our families. Think how happy we'll make them after we're gone!

Get a fair valuation, and if your wallet can't take the hit work out a payment plan with the fam for you to buy it!

If you plan to stick with this GF, offer to buy it.

If you plan to breakup soon, tell her and the family it's worth $500 but offer them $1000.

If you plan to marry this person, just take the watch and tell everyone involved you have no idea what happened to it.
