Dog leg lugs buying experience.

Hi all.

This year I bought quite a bit of dog leg lugs connies. I mean ref 14900/14902/167.005 and 168.005 only. (some exceptions)
I focus on ones with black onyx insert only, especially the ones that have small hour markers next to date window. You will see some don't have it because that reference don't offer that option and I had to accept it that way.
The price ranges from $1100 to $1400 usd for the pie pans.

And from $800 to $1500 usd for the others

Please keep in mind that they were not as nice as they are pictured here. Most of them need work here and there, like an original and correct crown, a correct date ring or a new crystal. The bracelets are extra on some and the price were jacked up accordingly.
For example, this is the photo from the seller

And I paid $1100 usd for it. Canada import tax was $110 and $40 shipping . then the cost for a correct date ring $80, new original crystal $70 plus my 4 hour labor and a correct bracelet for it, too.
Now it looks like this

That is what I like to share with new collectors, the market price and the cost to make your watch look all original and nice.
Where did I buy them?
I bought them from Vietnam, Japan and Canada (which cost me no tax)
Some were from US and that cost me some.
Thanks for reading my friends.

Regards
Hoi.

Here are a few examples - not onyx markers but black dial.

Hi Mike.
What are their market values now, may I ask?
Please give some numbers to help new collectors have an idea how much they should save.

Haven't kept up with these lately and there are not many for sale but I would say for these examples the floor would be >$2k.

As a Canadian collector, I find that it is harder to buy from ebay auction, especially the ones from US sellers. Buyers from US don't have to pay tax and sometimes they get free shipping from sellers and they can kick me out of the game easily.
It will be a different game if the seller is from Mexico, then we are even and I have more chances to beat American buyers 😁.
Yahoo Japan auction is ok but prices are high. Service fee is reasonable and if you deal with Buyee service powered by Tenso.inc , they ship it to you under your name c/o their company. In that way, when it comes to me in Canada, I don't have to pay any tax.
No ideas how much you guys have to pay from different countries.

I think more like a minimum of $2.5k each for your extremely nice examples, they just don't come up for sale looking like that and I'd wager there would be a bidding war for them if they did.

I have just the one 168.005 as I personally don't get along with the dog leg lugs and much prefer the lyre lugs of the earlier references. This one started black and has now faded somewhat, and as with Hoi's examples it arrived needing some work as it had both a wrong crown and wrong hand set.

The crown, hour and minute hands I've rectified but I'm struggling to find a correct length seconds hand. The one now fitted was provided by a WM with a parts account....but it's clearly the wrong length....I'm still a little peeved as this is now the second wrong length seconds hand I've bought for this one having provided both WM's I've used with the correct info 😵‍💫

You may be mistaken about American buyers not having to pay tax, Hoi. I just paid California sales tax on a buckle sourced on the East Coast, and my pal West Coast Bill also just paid California sales tax on an eBay purchase.

As they say, it was good while it lasted . . .

Do you know that you can cut it to the correct length and thin it down with 1200 grit sand paper?
But unfortunately, looks like it is not original Omega sweep second hand anyway .
The original one should not have that "hole" at the center.
My 168.005 pie pan with cross hair has that hole, too.

Good tip, but it looks like the tail is a bit longer too on these longer seconds hands. I think I'll try it anyway though.

Hmm, I'm confused now, I was sure I'd fitted the new wrong hand which I got from the Omega WM, but now I'm not so sure anymore...

Just bought this one from eBay. I will let you know if it fits correctly or not.

I also like to remind all new collectors who want to buy an imperfect Connie, that some genuine, original Omega parts are nearly impossible to find.
The correct decagonal crown with thin logo is hard to find and if you are lucky enough to see one for sale, it may be from $150 for a SS and $280 for a rose gold.

But if you are happy with a newer service crown, that will be a different story.

One of my biggest regrets (...I've had a few) in this hobby was not bidding more on this one, which was hammered at $2K incl. fees:

After the auction, a new member posted it here, having won it. I congratulated him and shortly thereafter he returned it to the auction house (apparently he couldn't afford it anyway?!?) and it was subsequently hammered at $3K. Once again, I was the runner-up 🙁

This one is for sale on eBay with BIN of $1350 usd
It comes with a wrong movement and a wrong case but if you can find a correct 551 with serial from 21 mil and up, a 167.005 case, you will be fine.
I have thought about it ( have a spare 551 with case) but just feel enough for this year. 😉

Ouch, sucks. But how do you "return it to the auction house"? Maybe laws differ between countries, but in most, you win the auction, you pay up, no excuses... If he just re-consigned it, he got stuffed with first buyer and then seller premiums I guess, so if you do go in for Schadenfreude that could be some comfort I hope.

Thank you for sharing! I am also a big fan of a PiePan conny with onyx markers.
Since i am located in Europe i mostly look for watches offered in Europe, but it seems one misses out a lot when neglecting the rest of the world.
Here is my one, the dial is not perfect, but overall perfectly fine for my taste 😀

Hi Eve.
That is a nice and sharp 14381 with lyre lugs, not dog leg. Personally, I like that design because it feels smooth on your wrist.
I bought some of them this year and this is one of them, a 14393 with some patina

Yes, and i must admit i even prefer the lyre lugs version. But i noticed you squeezed one in on the second group photo, so i deceided to share mine as well 😀
And btw. I love that combination of steel case with creamy/gold coloured patina dial! 👍
