Not trying to be an Ass, I get it, it was just funny to read through.
Well good I’m not here to argue. Sometimes I get rough around the edges but I come in peace

The wife is bemused by my obsession and a bit astonished at the number of watch related parcels that appear at our doorstep. But it gives her something to harass me about, which she likes. As long as I don't abuse our checking account there is no problem ::psy::

She grudgingly puts up with it, but does't support it wholeheartedly.

So my wife just told me tonight that she could understand how I "might want a dress watch and a sport watch but why so many?"

And I was like "...And a chronograph, and a GMT, and a Diver, and a perpetual calendar, and a solar powered one, and a manual wind one of each, and an automatic one of each, and a quartz one of each, and a red one, and blue one, and black one, and yellow one, and green one, and gold one, and silver one". And she was like, "Why do you need a dive watch, you can't dive anymore with one bad lung."

And I'm like,

You can tell her that the Dive watch is so you can know what time you need to go into the house to make her dinner while washing her car. The chronograph is so you can time cooking accurately while you are making said dinner. The GMT is so you can know what time it is in other time zones as you are planning vacations to take with her. The Perpetual Calendar is so you can make sure you are getting the dates right for the vacation planning. A manual wind is to make sure that when you take her to space on the first commercial moon flight, you can make sure you're at the moon hotel on time (the whole zero gravity thing- the quartz watches would also work for this- and you need to have backup for the manual winders of course). The black, yellow, green, gold and silver of all the above are to make sure you don't look like a buffoon while doing all the above wonderful things for her by not being color coordinated.

My plan is to start to use the argument that my failing memory means I can't remember what watches I've already got and accidentally get more. 😉 At least I think that's the argument. 😕

Collects moths? Well, I have an old suit she might be interested in.

Edit: I no longer have it, but I do have the memory of sitting down for a lunch meeting at a private club and only then noticing a moth hole here, and there, and there...::facepalm1::

Does she like chunky watches? Get your SMP for yourself and get her a reduced. On your 40th birthday give her the reduced- you will be matchy-matchy and if she loved it, you'll have buy-in.

Went to an AD on Friday to try on some Speedmasters. She walked around the store to keep our 8 week old calm. She comes back saying she found one that she liked. It was a $40k Patek. Getting her into this hobby will be expensive

I had the same experience- after she got the bug I asked what she likes and she started sending me web pics of Patek’s. Then I gave her a 30mm gold Omega dress watch (two hand) from the late 50’s and she forgot about the Patek....well, at least I hope she did.

Good idea. I thought that I might buy her a nice vintage watch and see how it goes.

Mine keeps me guessing whether she supports the hobby or not. She encourages me to spend money on stuff that makes me happy (and especially stuff that makes her happy) but makes fun of me for constantly browsing auctions and the forum here. We're currently wrapping up a holiday in Vietnam and somehow 😉 found ourselves in the (tiny) OB at Saigon Centre. They didn't have the blue SMPc that I want and was too tired and sweaty to have a long conversation in broken English so I said we should just go back to the hotel. She gets mad at me for dragging her there but I never said we had to go there, just if we were nearby...

Fellow-Forum member @styggpyggeno1 wrote a priceless essay on the topic of collecting and our relationship with the special Non-Collector in our lives:

In my case, Mrs. Jones has been admirably tolerant of my obsession with watches. We have each purchased watches for the other on several occasions, though I have been the beneficiary of this mutual watch giving much more than she has. To say that I'm pretty damn lucky (on many, many levels) is a gross understatement.

Damn man- that ring is bigger than her watch! 👍
