I got one about a year ago, albeit with the white dial and a decent amount of patina/damage to that dial. They do come up occasionally on Yahoo Japan and other Japanese auction sites. I think I've seen 4 or 5 in the last couple of years. Depending on condition they do command strong money.

They do, but primarily in Japan, and they tend to be expensive. This is mine, purchased many years ago.

Have you ever used this site to buy a vintage watch on?
All the script is in Japanese, understandably , so I am apprehensive.
Do you have any sense of the reliability of the movement of a 67 year old Seiko Alpinist ?
Thanks!
Fromjapan is a proxy buying company (like Buyee). I use them all the time and in my experience they’re very reliable.
As for the movement, I can’t say anything specific about this particular watch. According to the description it’s running well. It uses a movement that is very common in Laurels and Marvels from this period, so it would be easy to find a cheap donor movement, should you need one.

This is what google translate makes of the description:

Rare! Seikosha Seiko Laurel Alpinist (Ref. 14041) - Men’s manual-wind wristwatch, first-generation model. In working condition!

Don’t miss this opportunity!

: Size :

Case width: approx. 34 mm (excluding crown, buttons, etc.)
Wrist size (inner circumference): approx. ___ cm

(Measurements are taken by hand; please use them as a rough guide.)

☆ The item(s) shown in the photos are exactly what you will receive.
☆ The images were taken with a digital camera. While I have made every effort to ensure an accurate representation, please note that colors may appear slightly different depending on your monitor settings.

〇 The watch has been tested and is currently in working order.
It is functioning without issues as of today, and a one-day test (laid flat) showed no significant time deviation. However, if you require high-precision accuracy (down to the second), please refrain from bidding to avoid any potential issues.

〇 Considering its age, the watch is in relatively good condition. Please note, however, that there are signs of wear such as scuffs on the crystal, fading on the dial, and general scratches or dirt. If you are looking for a "perfect" item (like one found in a retail store) or are particularly sensitive to the condition of an item, please refrain from bidding.

〇 The original Seiko strap is included as a complimentary extra.

Thanks very much for the translation- I never thought to do that. I think I will hold off to see if the darker dial comes up, which is my strong preference.

I check the Japanese auction sites pretty regularly, so I’ll let you know when I come across one.
