im looking buying a seamaster someone is selling. Its an older model, late 60s. Previous owner had the case engraved for some award. However, if i was to buy it,, i would like to replace it with another case that has the seamaster logo. Wouldthe back case from a different seamaster watch fit if the width was equal to the one I would be purchasing?

It's a bad idea. No you can't guarantee fit and more importantly the model reference (case number) is written on the inside so you will be making an instant Franken and removing value. The best thing you can do is to either have the inscription professionally removed or find a caseback from exactly the same model, which from a 1960s piece will not be easy

In short ... not necessarily. Is it a nice inscription? Can we see?

Not to mention that model may never have had a Seamaster logo. Those were pretty much reserved for the professional models.

Let's not get into your desire to erase history. If you don't like engraving, you likely shouldn't buy it.

He may be talking about this type of case-back. We would need to know the reference.

Indeed, @Dan S. Reading between the lines, either this model did not or it was shaved off to fit the engraving.

I agree. I don't mind inscriptions at all. These watches, like it or not, were owned and loved prior to our possession and all have a history. Better to have at least a glimpse of it.

I think that is a front-loading case, in which case there is no case-back. So you better start liking that inscription.

If you are okay with the dial, the caseback would be okay too, I’d think.

Exactly. I wanted a case like this

You need a complete case. Although I still don't think it's necessary I got you more than covered. I can provide you with the exact watch , no inscriptions, complete and actually a great runner all for the one time special offer of $200 including delivery in the USA. 😀

Damn. That’s twice.

(That I agree with you enough to feel compelled to admit it.)

Thanks for the offer! However, u guys on the thread kind of talked me out of it. I do like the uniqueness of it. I tried looking up the guy and the award online just to make sure I'm not buying a killers watch or something.

Did you also notice on the dial that the 2 o'clock marker had been customized to a large "+2" symbol?

Clearly, the Plus-2 Award is a major part of this watch's history.

Did you find out who gives out a "Plus 2 Award"?
The only reference a google search came up with was the Rotary Club.

.

Reminds me of a funny story back a few years ago involving a Vintage Omega with a fella's name engraved on the back. We looked him up and avoided the watch like the plague. Good story for another thread.
