So have there been monetary crashes in the “watch market” historically in the experience of those with such experience.

There are many more you could add to that but the biggest in my mind is the entire brand Panerai.

They went from making good watches priced around the Omega Rolex mark to making a pile of limited editions, tourbillons, ultra complicated pieces with special materials and for a time the market lapped them up as the values of each LE kept going up. Then the market realised that Panerai didn’t respect their customers, was selling watches of poor quality in some cases and would “Malibu Stacy” re-release the most valuable LEs diluting the value.

A watch dealer mate he some bloke come in to unload a dozen of them that he’s paid big dollars for all unworn stuff the start of covid and they were worth cents on the dollar.
