Or misbehaving?馃榿

I think a lot of our fringe members are still waiting for the LE Speedmaster reveal thread that Miss Fox promised. Speculation has run rampant about what she'll do. She has already zombied herself, and posted shots at the gym, so the guys are a captive audience.

"keep abreast of the latest digital trends"

Sorry, not on my "To Do" list ever. If someone simply must know immediately what has happened with every ping and buzz their phone makes, then I can see these watches being something worthwhile. I don't fall into that camp...when my phone pings or buzzes, I usually ignore it until I'm taking a break from doing whatever it is I'm doing at the time. It's not "urgent" when an email arrives, someone posts on Facebook, or I get a text - it can wait.

I don't suffer from a FOMO addiction, but there are many who do, and this is why for example people text while driving, or are on their phones constantly during a concert. The latter happened at the last concert I was at with the 4 people in front of me, and it was very annoying to say the least. Not only that they were talking (yelling) to each other over the music about what they were reading on their phones. Of course the former kills many people each year, so is a much bigger concern, but it all reflects a disturbing trend in society in my view.

Cheers, Al

The reason there isn't a continuing market for smartwatches is that the price points are too high. I bought my Moto 360 at $350, I was kinda satisfied with what it did for me. When the battery would no longer keep decent charge, my Sony Smartwatch 3 bought at clearance for $125 had 3x the endurance, could charge off USB cables (so good to travel with), and was dunk-proof.

What I'm saying is when the price is low enough, people will be willing to buy it for fewer use cases. In my own case, it was both increasing use cases and a serious lowering of prices so win, win, win.

I highly recommend anyone with an Android phone who has been intrigued by one to buy the previous-gen models which will now be $100-$200. Think of it as like buying a Seiko 5 that has a use over and above wrist decor.

My recommendation is that you find one that specifically does NOT look like a traditional watch, and wear it on your non-watch wrist so that it looks like a black rubber wristband. It's easy to get away with style-wise, and you'll be surprised at how quickly you become dependent on it.

In addition to my mechanical watches, I own an Apple watch. Honestly, I love the convenience it offers. I wear it with the same frequency I wear my others, in a rotation, and in lieu of another - i.e. it goes on my left wrist as my only watch.

Reading a quick email or message or other notification on my wrist during a meeting or while at work removes the element of grabbing my phone to take a look at the most recent "breaking news". If one client of mine is fighting a fire, I know about it immediately, even if I'm onsite at another client.

Maybe I'm a victim of technology and convenience...

Will it replace my mechanical watches? HELL NO. Is it an interesting "toy" that renders itself useful every now and then? Absolutely.

Oops馃槵...hope I have not spoiled the party for you chaps馃槣. Will keep a low profile and out of Miss Fox's way in the coming weeks馃槈. I was actually genuinely pleased that she decided to become a fellow LE Apollo XI 45 owner馃憤...and not because of the reveal BTW...I was not even aware of that.

This is the reason why I don't put it on my left wrist, because the usefulness of it tempts me to no longer use my mechanicals - function over jewelry. Putting it on my right, I can use it all the time and still engage in the mechanical watch hobby

I get it. I wear my great-grandfather's bracelet on my right wrist and don't really like anything else over there... I thought at first perhaps it would detract from my mechanical watch hobby, but learned that the convenience is nice, but is only adequate as a temporary substitute. Mechanical watches are much prettier and much more intriguing to me.

Frankly I gave up on the "smartwatch with an analog face" look very quickly. At best it looks like the sticker of a watch face. On a screen, digital is easier to look at anyway. So now, my default watch face is a temperature and weather app. Where I live, temperatures can swing 30 degrees in a few hours. When I exercise, its a pedometer. When I am at the grocery its a shopping list. When I cook its a timer. Its never a watch face that tries to look like a mechanical. If you carry a baby around, sometimes you can't afford to have your spare hand holding a phone.

I do agree with your words but must add that I have no wish to be in competition with anyone regarding technology or watches. Best wishes and wear in good health!

QUOTE="meganfox17, post: 605797, member: 19806"]I always believe smart watches are here to stay. They are neither a Witch threat or Voodoo curse nor a replacement but a wonderful compliment. Don't confuse Pebble and those Apple numbers as trends in the whole niche. Pebble is like saying the Blackberry is dead so cellphones are trending down. The Apple Watch spiked huge off of the bat with a new type of buyer, many where not retained but they still created a bunch of repeat customers.

Good points. But the fact that Pebble opted to sell out so soon when they still had a loyal fan base and reasonably up to date technology does indicate perhaps consolidation in a market with slower than predicted expansion?

As I stated in my post I don't think the smartwatch is "dead", the title was just for fun to start a lively discussion...there is clearly a use case scenario for smartwatches perhaps more in the health/sports category. I do think though that the perceived smartwatch tsunami threat to mechanical watches is "dead"...and the fact this is apparent in 2017 will be useful for the industry to focus on its core strengths and not waste time being distracted by something that is not really the main threat going forward.

I still believe the main threats for the luxury watch industry are the grey market/excess inventory and related exaggerated pricing points, especially at the mid range luxury level (Omega, Rolex, IWC, JLC etc.) + not very successful attempts (so far) to engage a new generation of younger customers with direct marketing initiatives.

Great input by an actual smartwatch owner馃憤

I have seen people wearing Fitbit on one arm and a mechanical watch on the other and I have considered that option. All I might want in the future is notification of e-mails/text, something like this https://wearchronos.com/ would be good enough for me or a Fitbit type band with notification. Not sure I would want to wear it all the time.
I got a FitBit Charge HR with 鈥奨L strap and I wear it around my left ankle under my sock. It does a good job still tracking my HR and steps and makes it invisible to anyone Interact with.

I travel a lot and so it does feel a bit strange taking off my "ankle bracelet" at security checkpoints but not a big deal really.

I need to cool down and relax? I am not "concerned" about you, why should I be? I just think you have a different outlook on the digital world and I believe healthy arguments about different POVs is a constructive way to generate new insights. Your insights into smartwatch use would be valuable to the OF...did you see the @WatchVaultNYC post?. I have absolutely no issue with you being on the forum. I like your posts frequently. I also defended you several times when you started posting, which you seem to neglect in your "rant" above.馃檮

Of course I have no issue with women taking part in the forum, in fact I think it does make a refreshing change from the "boys club ambience"馃憤. I did post in provocative jest yesterday::stirthepot:: as I do think you are being a bit of a diva with the newbies, but so what, who cares? Your constant posts of your "good looks" have apparently earned you a "hottie" status from certain OF members馃グ...personally I find that whole foxy megan thing is getting a bit tiring as objectifying women is getting a bit passe in my middle age (in Rio women are judged much too much on their looks), but again who cares? That's just my POV. I am sure there are many in the OF who appreciate the "hottie" style and want you to carry on. I think you have a huge amount to contribute as you are clearly intelligent and interested in watches...I am just losing interest in the "hottie" thing, OK?

I really do not care if you find me uncool, I do not take part in this forum to earn status or "coolness" appreciation. I do sincerely apologize if I have caused you offence and I will no longer criticize your posts in the future, even in jest. Let's move on and have constructive dialog where it makes sense for us to exchange POVs.馃榾

I promise I will no longer do shadow hand bunnies in your spotlight (joke)::stirthepot::

Are you playing hard to get? Are we to "read between the lines" to find that you actually like MeganFox?

Regarding the Apple Watch:
I'm so old-fashioned and out-of-style that the Apple Watch was dead to me at the time of its introduction.

I'll kindly remind folks that millions of women were burned at the stake for no good reason.

Millions? Really?

I wear a smartwatch, practically 24/7. It tracks my steps, notifies me about work and personal stuff, give me directions while walking (without having my phone up all the time), controls my music, shows me security camera footage, records conversations that need to be recorded, shows me my shopping list. I can even use it as a remote camera trigger for my phone. It is waterproof and lasts 2-3 days on a charge (Sony Smartwatch 3). It's one of the most useful devices I own.

For people who counter "but your phone can do most of that", I reply "well your home computer and landline can do most of what your mobile phone does, and much better - yet you have a mobile phone. Convenience, convenience"

I wear it on my right wrist. I wear a mechanical watch on my left. If you understand that in function it does not compete with mechanical watches at all (except for maybe the low-low end), then there would be less haterz IMHO.

If a smart watch/band provides you the motivation to reach or surpass a number of health goals like steps, flights, calories, etc then I'm all for it...I don't think these watches should be compared to awesome mechanical watches. Although, I have a feeling someone here will be able to calculate steps/calories lost using their mechanical watch??

On a side note, it is crazy to me how some of these special edition smart watches costs so much. Here is one for $114,995 18-karat gold Apple Watch with 11 .30 carat diamonds...
