Sometimes it takes a while to realise what may be going on. It started with a watch which was posted today:

So serial 622406. I already knew another one with this caseshape and close serial (622.391). Tank formula comes to 44 so probably made in a batch of 48. I know more close serials but there was always a bit of strange thing.

Ref 5938 has a number on the case. Normally this correspond with the number withing the batch. If .x46 is 1 then .x50 is 4. In this case I know 5 serials of this batch and 2 case numbers (47 & 68, see pic below). Pics are clear so no doubts about the numbers.

However: it did not match. Based on 14 the batch would have started with 622.313 and based on 68 with 622.314. Strange isn't it?

My basic idea was that this batch run from either 622.313 to 622.384 or from 314 to 385. This numbering system is used in perhaps a dozen other references but it never fails.

However there was always another strange thing. I know hunderds and hundreds of batches but I have to find one where a (convincing) 'strange' other reference fits into a certain batch. However in this case there was one which may fit but I never realised it. I knew this watch for quite some time but I could never fit it. Until now. This is the watch:

Serial 622.374. Not that easy to see but with some magnifying little doubt. I now realised how it may fit (I coined this reference 2606, which is a Jaeger one because so far I have never found a UG one)

Reference 5938 runs from 622.313 to 622.373; in total 61 pieces. Then comes the 2606. Therafter 5938 continues with another 11 pieces with serials 622.375 to 622.385. Then comes - what I coined UCD27 (unidentified case design #27, yes that means there are 26 others before that) - with serials 622.386 to 622.433.

The proof of the pudding will obviously discovering 622.373 with case number 61 and/or 622.375 with 62.

Another interesting thing. On the lug of the gold one something is punched. But what? Anyone a clue? It may be a number but it may also be a mark?

I wholeheartedly believe there are one ofs/salesman samples out there.

In the past people were probable afraid to post them out of fear of being ridiculed but now many of them eventually become authenticated.
