DHL lost the package - no compensation they say

DHL are the worst. 2 times I have lost 2 packages and 2 times I have lost my money from the product and the worst thing is that they continue to charge me as if the shipment had reached its destination. For me it is good because the cost per shipment is not so high. But I would say that it is one of the worst companies

I am currently looking for a shipping method to get a ~4k EUR watch shipped from Poland to the Netherlands.

Checking DHL online shows I can ship insured for a maximum value of ~1.5k EUR.

Checking FedEx online, it won't even give a quote for a value of ~4k EUR.

The buyer and I are communicating openly about how best to ship insured and I'm not sure how to go about it...

Any tips or advice? (I have searched other threads, if you have another link I should follow, please share...)

Thanks.

A very reasonable suggestion, and would usually be a good option for me. I normally go to Europe once or twice a quarter, however, my next trip to Poland will be my third and last trip until June. Unfortunately, my itinerary is very full and short with no additional time.

Often, I would even be able to schedule an upcoming trip to connect via AMS with a decent layover time, allowing a trip into the city to make a shipment. I doubt the buyer wants to wait until June however... 馃榾

Try UPS
No common carrier will insure watches for more than a nominal amount. The risk of loss is too great.

There are at least a dozen threads on the forum about private insurance for watch sellers.

That's interesting because I got a website quote from UPS yesterday to send an expensive watch and it asked for declared value. I called them up to check this was the insured amount, and they said it was.

You're sure? With me UPS is NOT insured

I'm not, no, which is why I called them, but they seemed to be sure. Although in another thread I've just seen the terms may exclude watches. I need to do some more research to confirm - just passing on what I was told by them yesterday.

Well apprently there is a clause in the terms and conditions of carriage (in miniscule print!) that says packages cannot contain jewellery or watches above $500 in value. So UPS out too then (although I have used them before, luckily did not need to claim)!

You could try approaching the "The Electricity Board", I suppose馃槈
Some of the Brits may remember these guys in the seventies...

Cheers, Chris

Just seen this, which by the most extraordinary of coincidences I was watching only last night! When I remembered where the "It's Barry Manilow" line when looking at anyone through a door viewer came from. Anyone else remember this?

That line became more relevant in the last 10-12 years when smellfies came into vogue; and now everyone who tries to take a photo of themselves from too close with a cameraphone looks like Barry Manilow!!

the interesting thing you have to remember about DHL is that for non-US accounts, they seem to charge a fraction of what UPS and fedex charges for inbound shipping into the US: Outbound or using a US account seems to cost about the same as their competitors.

This might seem to imply that they dont expect anything of value to be in the shipments, though if you dont mind paying for the insurance, 'you gets what you pays for'

DHL doesn鈥檛 service the US market anymore. You can use them to ship outside the US.

I was able to add third-party insurance to a DHL shipment from the US to Germany through a local shipping store.

I鈥檝e been waiting 2 1/2 months for FedEx to return a parcel to me. Mistakes can and do happen with all of these couriers. Anyone buying/selling/posting watches on a semi regular basis will sleep a lot better with a parcelpro account.

Ya gotta wait for Tom to get off the island!

I wonder how it is that a company with no ability to impact the likelihood of delivery is more willing to insure something than the actual company making the shipment...

All insurers insure things they have no impact on at all.

It's a good question, but I assume the answer just has to do with specialization. Insurance companies like to deal with risk and shipping companies prefer to stick with shipping. It would be nice if the shipping companies could partner up and make it easy for us. I guess ParcelPro is basically an example of this.

So, about a month ago I bought a vintage bracelet for my 69 Speedmaster and it got lost in DHL's Leipzig hub.
Well, ok, things happen, especially in December.
It was the DHL Express service.

The seller did not insure nor declare the value of the package.
He had a good experience with DHL before and he has sent out many much more expensive packages with DHL.
Anyway, he contacted DHL and sent them info about my payment and the contents.
It did not make any difference at all.
DHL just won't compensate a dime.

How is this possible?
I mean it doesn't matter what the value was, they lost it, it's their fault.
But, they act like it's something their clients should consider when buying their service.
They won't even compensate for the cost of the shipping.

Have you guys have had a similar experience?

ParcelPro is more than just an insurance company or provider. They have teams of people who follow the parcels they are insuring, making sure they get to their destinations, making sure they get picked up at depots and don't sit there exposed for days (they will actually have parcels returned if they are not picked up fairly quickly), and intervening with the carrier if they see something go wrong. For certain areas where thefts are common, they will divert the parcel to their own center, and then deliver it from there to the final destination themselves...

In other words, they most certainly impact the likewlihood of successful delivery, and this is what sets them apart from the other companies who are simply offering insurance coverage.
