Demise of Rolex - from the view of a collector

Is Rolex the most-faked brand out there? If a significant number of people are satisfied wearing (and by that token, seeing but not recognizing) a Fauxlex, and if what other people think of what's on my wrist is important to me, why would I want a real one?

couple of thoughts here:

1) i love vintage rolex. the watches are AMAZING. see avatar to the left. or a gilt dial sub or GMT master. there is a reason these are amongst the most sought after watches on earth IMO

2) i have almost no interest in modern rolex. almost none. until. . .the ceramic daytona. which i love as a watch -- NOT as a status symbol.

yes, i paid way more than MSRP. i don't really care what rolex brand strategy is around shortages and MSRP. for me the watch at high teens k USD was well worth it strictly on its own terms. i could care less that a modern speedmaster is probably a superior watch at a fraction of the price -- i have zero interest in a modern speedmaster (and yet, my ed white is one of my favorite vintage pieces)

3) TRF is a terrible watch forum. used to look there a lot, now zero interest.

4) OF is an AMAZING watch forum. and that's down to the setup, the people, the mods, and the content. i spend 90% of my time here. i would rather talk about rolexes, enicar, omegas, gallets, UG, even heuer here than anywhere else.

5) interestingly, i recently spent a day at the mercedes benz world in UK with a professional instructor driving really high performance cars (GTR and the like). i think literally EVERY instructor i met had a daytona. these are not billionaires (and probably not millionaires). they are pro drivers and clearly the brand still speaks to them for whatever reason.

6, and last. . i see NOTHING inconsistent with any of these statements. If rolex ain't for you--no worries. If it is, also no worries. Life is too short to perseverate on brands you don't like, watches you don't like, bad watches, and of course bad wine!

There are some pretty knowledgeable people who post in the TRF vintage forum. I don't bother with any of the other forums there.

I resent their “shortage” . It’s causing me to hesitate wearing my GMT master 2 despite it being fully insured.
I've been doing the exact same thing with my Submariner. It used to be in my regular rotation, but it spends a lot of time in the watch box instead of on my wrist. I'm much more comfortable wearing my SM300 MC.

but in a way you’re saying.... I don’t want to wear a great watch that I have and want because.... other people think it’s great too, so instead I’ll wear a watch that has less value.

It’s weird. That’s all.

My wife would agree ... I'm weird 😁

But in all seriousness, I see your point. It just feels a little odd to see that a watch I bought new just four years ago is now worth about 40% more than I paid for it, and climbing.

Sure, but it’s the same watch, so just enjoy it. A nice watch in a box is much nicer on a wrist.

I can't argue with that! 👍

Agreed.

Now, about my last visit to TRF, seriously, when was the last time I logged in?

I’ve never spent any time on TRF, as I can get all of my Rolex questions answered here or through people I know on IG.

Rolex is my favorite brand, always has been since I was a little kid...I got my first vintage rolex when in 1987 when I was 8, and owned a ton of them over the years.

I got my first vintage Omega around the same time, but never focused on them until about 4 years ago. Omega brought me back into the hobby because I could afford them, and the money I made from them allowed me to buy the Rolex models I really wanted.

I’ve kept a handful of vintage Omega, as I love them, and focused my collection on vintage Rolex.

I got my first modern Rolex, that I plan on keeping, an M series Kermit, as an everyday, no worries, watch. I love it because I don’t care what happens to it...it is a beast!

Now that I am priced out of the market, I get to focus on enjoying my collection and furthering the friendships I’ve made in the watch world...because without those friendships, this hobby wouldn’t be much fun.

Just me - I was curious. I can't check it myself because then the last visited date will change to today...

One thing I noticed is that the sales section next door is always “bank wire only”... also people talk concern more about resale value.
I’m not a Rolex fanboy but I’m considering getting a vintage one. I can’t stand the modern big and beefy case.

No trace of you at all on TRF, Larry. Nada. They must have banned and deleted you.

Assuming you have the same user name on TRF, there is indeed no sign of you there.

Not to rub salt in the (wounded) TRF, but yesterday I left a bit of a bitter post there in response to a single thread where, I sh!t you not:

- the OP wanted to bring his Rolex to the AD "for a bath", didn't want or know how to wash it at home
- a followup response said, in all seriousness AFAIK, "it's fine to just put it in the dishwasher"
- then to top it all off, another poster stated that to get the moisture out of the watch (what moisture ???), put it in a hot oven with the crown unscrewed to dry it out, then throw it in a bowl of rice

I pretty much lost it and hung up. May be my last visit.

/End rant

Hmmm. I do use DocJekl at WUS, and HeadphoneAddict at a few other forums. Maybe that was it.

Does it matter?

Nearest Porsche owner to me (three doors away) wears his Rolex to clear drains for elderly neighbours and to go out on a mountain bike with a paint can to mark protruding tree roots before the kids follow a marked ride through the woods. He did have a Ducati in the garage but I think he's just down to an old Triumph scrambler now. Good guy.
There’s a bloke on the next allotment plot to me who wears a Rolex when working his patch. One day he turned up to water his vegetables in his Ferrari California. Typical Rolex wearing Ferrari driving allotment holder..........
