There’s a bloke on the next allotment plot to me who wears a Rolex when working his patch. One day he turned up to water his vegetables in his Ferrari California. Typical Rolex wearing Ferrari driving allotment holder..........
Typical Gardner!!!

I just joined TRF because I'm most likely going to get a Tudor Black Bay and I have to agree with most of the comments in this thread. TRF isn't the most welcoming forum for newbies. In fact, I've seen a number of snarky remarks to new member questions. Most of the threads seem to be concerning the shortage, AD horror stories and/or value retention.

Buying a luxury watch is a major purchase for me, which means a lot of research and saving my pennies. I just can't run out and drop 7-9K at the drop of a hat. However, I really don't think of resale when I buy a watch. I buy it to enjoy it. To me, a watch isn't an investment. There are much better ways to maximize your ROI out there.

I generally hang out in the Vintage Forum at TRF and I see a lot less pretentiousness among the vintage folks. I rarely see what most of you complain about.

I think the "Instagram snaps photo of cool watch, cuff links, skinny jeans, and spiffy shoes" type migrated to TRF (and other places) but that is the generation that is coming up. Some of you are those types, some of you were those types, and as you get older, you become more critical of those attitudes.

It is a forum, a collection of diverse thinking people, it happens. Get over it ; )

Now Get Off My Lawn ; )

Haha spit on skinny jean and spiffy shoes comment.
I do get the feeling a big chunk of people next door are more interested in making profit flipping watches than actually enjoying watches.

I come to OTF to learn. Good people, smart and I usually walk away with a new kernel of knowledge.

TRF is full of useless questions 99 times out of 100. Throw in the ridiculous grey marketers hawking stuff at 35% or double retail and the only reason to go is to have a laugh at the absurdity.

Some years ago I was shopping for a tie during the Christmas rush at Nordstrom in the Stanford Shopping Center. I noticed a line of 6-7 guys standing at the only available sales desk. As I watched, I saw numerous status symbols: Rolexes, Pebble Beach sweaters, Ferrari key fobs, etc. The guy at the head of the line, 50ish, was in plain jeans and a nice t-shirt. He wrote a check, and this exchange occurred (I'm making up the name, having forgotten):

Saleswoman: Thank you, Mr. Nelson. Hey, it says on your check you live on Nelson Road. I suppose they named it after you, ha ha!!
Nelson: Well, yes, they did, actually.

There's always a faster gun...........

Hmmm. I do use DocJekl at WUS, and HeadphoneAddict at a few other forums. Maybe that was it.

I got banned from TRF a couple months back (account was like 7 years old with thousands of posts). The mod "PADI" is an absolute goof with his strong opinions and broken english. One day he decided to go on a power trip. I actually got banned on a thread comparing how the "for sale" section works on TRF vs how it works here, on OF. I was explaining how I like that you can comment here after a certain threshold of posts. I like the communal aspect and we have good moderation here so the comments on FS threads are typically benign.
Well, he of course had to disagree and say that "TRF has always been like this and it will not change" (sans grammar).
I fired back something along the lines of "well, if things never changed in the real world, women wouldn't be voting" and boom, permaban.

My best friend irl then made a post on TRF explaining what happened to me and PADI banned him too, within seconds. We were even batman donators or whatever, (they do a yearly PayPal scam thing where you pay $25 and pad the mods pockets and someone "random" gets a watch) but I digress.
I like Rolex watches, but TRF, not so much. Thanks PADI.

So, I might get banned for posting here that I haven't signed into TRF since 2014?

I'm with you some of the way. However, I really like some of the recent designs and their innovation continues apace. I love the interaction I can have with my Skydweller and an annual calendar from Rolex at the RRP price point does seem 'reasonable' (if not a bit of a steal) doesn't it?

Love the AC on my SkyD as well.

Would love for Rolex to come out with a modern flyback.

Demise of rolex is a bit strong. I am on both forums as well. Probably watchuseek forum in the past too. Originally I was on trf just cause the bug bit me when I had noticed the explorer 2 in polar. As a young collector I grew up not like rolex because of its connotations and cultural implications. Ive stayed on the forums for sometime but mostly gathering knowledge. However, lately its all the same junk. The days of knowledgeable participants sharing information seems to have passed. The vintage section is nice tho since I really dont care much for anything past the 5 digit serials. But that is a different can of worms. I do not think rolex will be affected heavily by the current situation. In fact, I believe they will likely brush the dust off and keep going as they have always done. A lot of the other watch companies may not survive this global event so well. The stunt with the wait lists and scarcity was a bit much tho. However as I do not care about the 6 digit lines, I don't have a dog in that race. I do believe the current black swan event may level the playing field a bit and force some of those who bought rolex as a look at me flex to dump.

Thanks to the moderators for attending the former poster, FloRolex! Some people don’t have the capability of foretelling the inevitable. I’m certain there was a landslide of reports re: the stupid posts!

I understand where you, OP, are coming from... but as the proud new owner of this...

...how can one say that this is not a tool watch, despite its shininess!!? 😎

I agree with the point of view in the initial post in this thread - and dislike Rolex's direction in the past two decades (I'd probably praise it if i were their shareholder).

I wonder if there are brands that have consciously chosen the opposite direction.

Brands that have become less "see my chunky shiny watch" and more tool and purpose built driven.

If you were a shareholder, you'd be the only one 👍
