Would someone go to TRF and look at my profile and tell me, when was the last time I logged into the forum there? Thx

I'm with you some of the way. However, I really like some of the recent designs and their innovation continues apace. I love the interaction I can have with my Skydweller and an annual calendar from Rolex at the RRP price point does seem 'reasonable' (if not a bit of a steal) doesn't it?

I've never been a member of TRF and quite possibly never will be but it sounds like fun " is it safe to wear my Daytona in France” 😁
And just because every thread needs pictures
Get those strawberries away from your watch! Everyone knows that strawberries will cause all sorts of issues with watches!

I'm not a member at TRF, but curious to know if anyone has posted a reality check like this over there...? Sometimes people just need to hear it.

Actually, I wanted to ask if can harvest strawberries with my Rolex on but apparently not. Thanks @oddboy for the heads up! 😁

Yes, a few threads similar to this one.

I joined TRF around the same time I joined here. The people were friendly at first (probably the old timers), but I responded to a few threads by other newbies asking questions (nothing as rediculous as can I wear my Rolex while harvesting strawberries 😉 ), and the others got really snarky with the new guys. Yes we have our fare share of snark and grumps here, but mostly it seems in jest or curmudgeonly- not belittling. We all have to start somewhere and the general tone there seemed really snooty.
I also agree that the layout of this site is much more user friendly (particularly on mobile), which makes it a joy to use.

I'm a "member" at TRF but of late have decided to wean myself off it mostly due to the high ratio of really idiotic posts as mentioned numerous times above. Now I find myself going there to flame some stupid post rather than learn anything, so I will stop going as it's just negativity feeding my curiosity.

As a longtime Rolex and Omega owner I still love both brands but am definitely far more comfortable wearing an Omega; I'm not a showy guy so for me wearing Rolex comes with a heavy price to pay mentally...I just like the damn watches but I'm semi-paranoid I'm being judged as a hipster with too much cash haha!

Lol!! That sounds more like an issue for therapy than an issue for Rolex.
The hipsters wouldn’t be caught dead in a Rolex- they aren’t ironic enough. Apparently the 80’s calculator watches are making a come back...who would have speculated on those!?!

Wait- I take that back- a blinged out gold Presedential from the 80’s with a Members Only jacket and acid washed jeans would definitely be ironic enough for any hipster

Controversial post...ever.

No longer controversial. These posts pop up regularly.

...TRF if you are a member has really taken a turn for the worst......
But since 2007 when the ceramic subs started to come in the direction Rolex has taken with over engineered borderline clinical watches has really ruined the brand for me...ever.

Over engineering sells. Who in his right mind needs a dive watch good for 12,800 feet? Absolutely nobody but it is quite a technological marvel and it appeals to those who appreciate an extremely over the top diver. The sports car analogy always comes to mind.

To me, they seem to make watches at the expense of the intended purpose, tool watches, usable tool watches...ever.

I'm sorry to say that basically nobody uses watches as tools anymore. Chronos are used for cooking, park meters etc...divers are worn for rainy days, a dip in he pool....watches are designed as adaptable jewelry. Still can be used as tools but unlikely to happen

Usher in the “look at me and my watch” clientele and Rolex has become more of a “to be seen in” watch brand; not that this hasbnt been the case for a while now with the “I’ve hit the big time” yellow gold president bracelet day dates that became popular in the 80s... its just more so these days...ever.

A must statement in any "controversial Rolex post" it seems.

.The shiny, chunky sunburst dial subs are attracting a different crowd, and it shows in AD wait lists, grey prices, scalpers and the used market...ever.

See above...

..To me it’s a real shame, Rolex and the Rolex forums seem to have lost a bit of its soul, judging by the topics that pop up there, “what piece shall I get next, what’s hotter BLNR or Hulk, shall I sell my omega, Tudor, JLC for a Daytona, where can I buy a batman, is this a fair grey price, can I wear my sub on the beach, is it safe to wear my Daytona in France”....ever.

You can see this behaviour with almost every other luxury watch brand..

I just wondered if anyone else shared this view?

I wonder what the objective of this post is?

The one positive in this is the silly wait times and elitetist management of AD wait lists has turned me onto other brands and given me a much greater appreciation of omega...ever.

Ps I’m clearly not delusional, I understand Rolex in terms of sales and market share is in a better position than ever.

Ok...so you dislike Rolex and loving Omega..Got it.

Hey, scallops can turn in seconds, don’t negate the use of a $5k chronograph over an egg timer!

And as a professional large format photographer, I regularly use my Speedy for timing long exposures...something wonderfully mechanical about hitting the cable release and start/stop pusher simultaneously and hearing the click of the shutter and the watch together.

Wait, people wear 5k to 10k + usd watches for appearances? Noooooooooo! Any of us who can’t admit our watches, at least in part, are for others to see are not being completely honest with themselves. I dare say this forum would have scant few photos if that were the case. We love our watches and want others to see and appreciate them. I’m guilty.

The new direction Rolex appears to be heading in is fine with me, it makes me appreciate vintage more. Most people don’t wear watches as tools anymore, so it is probably a rational business choice for them.
Well said!

Let’s not forget that Rolex is a business trying to make as much money as possible (as other brands too)
Granted, Rolex is a status symbol but it is debatable on as which brand gas the higher status, PP, AP....
It also depends how you wear your watch...
Which is cooler, a royal oak, a nautilus, a modern Pepsi, a speedmaster...
Maybe vintage ones....
Personally I prefer the vintage rolexes to the modern ones where the ceramic bezel is, in my opinion, quite flashy and the case a bit thick for its size.. but there is no right or wrong...
One thing is certain, creating shortages drives prices up... look at the new Pepsi but also the nautilus...
Cheers

I think they're mostly hideous or dull, with a couple of exceptions, e.g. the Explorer. But to say that they're dying is a bit premature. They cater to their audience, and very successfully.

I think it’s all got a bit much over there. I’ve been a member for a few years now and there are a large number of inane posts every day where people are more worried about value than liking the actual watch. Things like ‘show your Rolex and your Porsche!’ Sort of says something about some of the newer members. But that said there are some good guys over there.

Rolex’s marketing strategy is very much aimed at the younger, affluent flash boys and girls. Seems fair that the demographic and therefore the posts will change as a result of that.

I still enjoy it, but I don’t much like modern Rolex anyway (sky dweller/Daytona aside) so I don’t get too worried about the lack of watches etc. I prefer to look at watches I can actually buy which is why I also enjoy brands like omega, longines etc. These days.

Nearest Porsche owner to me (three doors away) wears his Rolex to clear drains for elderly neighbours and to go out on a mountain bike with a paint can to mark protruding tree roots before the kids follow a marked ride through the woods. He did have a Ducati in the garage but I think he's just down to an old Triumph scrambler now. Good guy.
