I think this is a terrible practice of taking deposits before the watch has even been announced.

I spoke to a couple of OB today and was told exactly the same pretty much from both. They will not be taking any deposits on a watch that they have no info on, design or price.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Taking a deposit for a watch that no one has seen, number of LE is unknown, price is a mistery and timing is as known as rest of info.

Again, refundable deposit if the end product doesn't appeal. And chances are it's a watch a lot of collectors will want - I've been very enthusiastic about most of the LEs of the past 5 years or so, and I expect the 50th to be really cool, so I was glad to put down 7k to secure my spot on the list.

Just out of curiousity. What if they offer you making a deposit for 55th and 60th anniversary? Would you be willing to make a downpayment?
😝 LOL

Now would be ridiculous of course. But recall that Swatch Group has left Baselworld - so who knows when the 50th will be shown? Could be January, like the original Speedy Tuesday (which, it should be said, did not begin deliveries until that July). Or could still be end of March or even later on, who knows. But OBs taking deposits from known collectors doesn't seem ridiculous to me in November as the watch will surely be announced - if not deliveries already begun by - July 20th.

So far it's only a rumour as there's nothing official yet ... as far as we know...
Beware as strange tactics can/might turn out 180° ... when potential clients go from FOMO towards JOMO !

So I made a down payment on a watch of unknown design, material, production total, and delivery date also. I figured it would be safer to have loaned Omega some cash interest fee and collect a full refund if the eventual watch is not of interest than to miss out on a high-demand LE in case I do love the design. As crazy as it sounds, and as odd as is as a business practice, I feel fortunate that I was given the opportunity to do so.

I asked about this when arranging the deposit. Limited editions aside, I was curious what the plan was for announcing 2019 novelties if there is no trade show to tie it to. No official word but they expected the timing to be similar to Baselworld, possibly shortly before to steal some thunder.

So what if this watch is allocated on the website like Ultraman and you miss out when you have put a deposit down at a OB or AD? I'm betting that both can't be certain at this point how it will be allocated. So put 20k if you want but you might not get a watch! Your 5k implies a promise of supply which may very well not be fulfilled.::rimshot::

Or maybe Omega is trying to raise the brand into Patek territory.

But they can't even overtake Rolex, so they stomp on Breguet to get into the Patek market? Wut. Hayek pls

It probably won't be - the internet reservations so far have been a feature of the Speedy Tuesday releases, which are celebrating an internet phenomenon. In the midst of both of those releases, three LE Speedmaster models were released traditionally (seven if you consider the Tokyo 2020 line to be separate models, eight if you count the gold Apollo XVII as separate from the steel too)

Got my OB manager on the phone, they will be 2 models only , they cannot talk about what but for exemple they will get 20 only for the boutique and they will be spread across the good customer of the OB , no money upfront or whatever knowing that low number of pieces will make that watch sell without any problem.

I would gladly put down deposits for each for the 5 limited editions celebrating the 53rd birthday of the Moon landing which will also be celebrating that the 60th birthday is then only 7 years away.

Soooooooooooooooooo, they will take deposits on a fictitious watch, but steal our money and not deliver a watch we apparently DONATED money for 8 months ago? Hmmmmmmm.....

Apollo 8??? It case anyone has forgotten, it was originally promised and released in August 2018. HA!!!

I have a feeling this is less of a "take money before the watch is announced" thing, and more of a "let's get our most dedicated fans onboard early so they don't miss out". Omega isn't advertising this or even letting ADs know - it's just the Boutiques who are contacting known Speedmaster nuts to get in early. I have a feeling the 50th is going to end up becoming a very hot watch in 2019 (afterwards, who knows) and I think they're just trying to give the serious collectors a heads up.
Again, refundable deposit if the end product doesn't appeal. Did you put down $7k at an OB or AD? Based on what others are saying here, if it was an OB, then Omega corporate is not consistent in the way its policies are applied if some people are told by OBs that they won't take deposits from customers for "unknown" products while other OBs are pocketing $7K 😲. If it was an AD, I hope the receipt was specific about what the deposit was for and the refund conditions. I wouldn't hand that kind of money to an AD as there is no certainty they'll even get an allocation.

I’ve asked the OB I used in London to collect my ST#2 about news and reservation process and got the reply :

At present Swiss HQ have not yet disclosed any information. As such I am not able to confirm or deny; nor do we yet have any such boutique waiting list.....

But maybe I’ve just not spent enough £ there to be worthy of their ‘list’
