I wish eBay would just drop Best Offer. I disable it on my items because want bids.

I guess this is my gripe- it’s a ME issue not a them issue. I get excited, I want to make an actual offer and win it now- I want it- NOW! And they fυck up my whole joy with their little games. Again, that’s a me problem….but I want it!!

You can still message the seller with a ‘question’ I have done that and explained (briefly) why I thought X was a good price and that the auction was unlikely to reach that number and or they may get a complaint. I sometimes also include a suggestion for reduced shipping if applicable. That has worked on occasions. One time I suggested a seller split up an item. They did do that and then I still lost the bloody auction for the part I wanted (no good deed goes unpunished:0). People can stop and re-list if they get new information or have made an error in my view.
I do agree from YouTube to eBay the algorithms and rules increasingly drive consumption from big business and do not help independent sellers, which is probably a strong message for our direction of travel...

EBay is ripe for replacement imho.

unfortunately their reach is global. But honestly I think there is an opening for a watch auction platform.

there are a couple of startups. So far none have won my confidence.

The confidence is the issue. As much as we all bitch about eBay, as a buyer- I have 99% confidence that I will be protected if things go south, and my credit card that is linked to PayPal is the other 1%. I haven’t had any issues since the PayPal/eBay split, but it has made me wonder how that would go if I had a serious problem.

And as much a dedicated watch platform would be awesome, some of my best buys have been from pickers who are selling garage sale booty and found a watch among the salt and pepper shakers and Hummel figurines

Yup. Agreed, and that’s how I will proceed and normally do. As I said above, just venting about the guys who take a sip from the punch bowl, then pour the rest back in
It's not my common practice, but I believe I've done this in the past (place a low bid to freeze out offers and show auction interest) when I intend to snipe with a real bid. Curious if you think that is poor sportsmanship.

ebid has been around for years now and works well, the issue is that the reach of ebay is so disproportionate that there is nothing for sale elsewhere than ebay... Sellers had rather pay a lot and go through many inconveniences associated with ebay, than go to a friendlier, cheaper place where there are no buyers... I can undesrtand them.

I agree the market is ripe for a competitor, but the main barrier to entry, i.e. reaching critical mass against a huge historical player without offering a real P.o.D. beyond lower listing costs mainly , is huge...

So you’re the one!! 😉
Not poor sportsmanship, just another strategy of playing the same game.

Here’s why I did it. I put in a “entrance” bid so EBay can remind me when it’s a few hours from ending to put in my “real” bid. (Ive never bought a watch from EBay, I’m not knowledgeable enough to walk that dark alley. But I image others use their bid as a timer/reminder, like I do. assholes, I know)

becuase no matter what my entrance bid is it will most likely be outbid.
i suck at following this stuff, if eBay reminds me an hr away from ending, I’ll put in a market bid.

I do the same thing. Bid low for the reminders and snipe at the same time. I think that my bid is not low, I risk pushing up the auction price prematurely.

Amen.
And “Make an offer” is a tool for seller to gauge interest. Seller’s mind price is always, ALWAYS above market. It’s a tool designed for seller, rarely works to buyers advantage.

Sorry J, but the dude will not likely to accept your honest offer.

Players gonna play.

Anyway, it's not just tire-kickers.

The emergent behaviors in a market are fascinating.

When I do sell on ebay, I put a starting auction price at the absolute minimum I'll be willing to let something go for. Depending on mood, I'll set the offer price somewhere near the top end of where I expect the auction to go or not at all. End result is either an auction at a price I'm happy with or an offer from a motivated buyer who wants the certainty of skipping the auction process. Seems fair from my end.

I tend to prefer these kinds of listings as you can read the seller and know what their bottom and top are- the game is to get it somewhere in the middle where both parties are happy. The ones I find most frustrating are those that start at .99c with a reserve and you can bid it up all week and never hit that reserve. I usually don’t bother when they fail to sell and get relisted. That seller doesn’t really want to sell it.

I think at least the make an offer option is not removed if the reserve has not been met. But if the price is unrealistic which is usually the case with reserve prices, then this point is kind of moot. I have not checked this recently, but it probably still works that way on Ebay, unless my memory fails me and I am confusing this with another auction site. Tbh, I am tired of playing games, like reserving my max bid for the last 10 seconds. Other bidder can be using sniping methods either automatic or manual and I am not always available during the last seconds of an auction to be actively monitoring it.
