Dealing with Swatch Group USA (SGCST)

Has anyone found it difficult to deal with Swatch Group USA? This has certainly been the case for me. I have two watches being serviced right now. My Speedmaster is getting a full service in the US, and my vintage Seamaster De Ville is getting a full service in Switzerland.

I acquired the Seamaster De Ville without the original strap and buckle. It has a 14K solid gold case and it’s in remarkably good condition. I purchased a solid gold Omega buckle for it, but a standard length strap is too tight for my wrist. I can hardly buckle it. It was sent to Omega with the strap and buckle in place.

The first contact that I received from SGCST was about 4 weeks after sending the watch to them. They told me that it would be a minimum of $900 to service it, and asked for my approval. I granted approval and then I asked them about long strap options and/or gold bracelet options for the watch. I’d prefer a gold bracelet, but I don’t know what bracelet is period correct for the watch. My assumption is that it’s a “beads of rice” bracelet, but I don’t exactly know.

A few more weeks passed and a different representative from SGCST contacted me and informed me that the gold bracelet for this watch is no longer available. I responded and asked for the correct part numbers for the bracelet and end links so that I could pursue a used bracelet on the secondary market. A few weeks later, I received another email from a different person letting me know that the bracelet isn’t available. I responded the same way that I did before.

I then received an email letting me know that the charge will be $600 and the full service will take 27 weeks. I sent my approval.

A few more weeks passed, and a different person from SGCST sent me instructions to ship the watch to Switzerland. I responded and let them know that they already have the watch. I then received a response from a different person at SGCST letting me know that they would add a new black leather strap to the watch as part of the full service.

I’ve responded asking for more details. Will the new strap be longer than a standard strap? Are there other options? I haven’t received a response yet.

This is frustrating because I’m never dealing with the same person, and they will only allow email communication. I still want a gold bracelet, but I have no idea what options are available. Is there a 14K solid gold bracelet, or only gold plated or gold filled options? Which style is correct?

I wish this was easier…

Yea you’re unlikely to find a solid gold bracelet from them, do you have photos of the watch we may be able to point you in the right direction there. Comms can be a bit disjointed when it’s a company that big relaying information between different people in different languages.

Ironically, I received another email from them while I was typing that post. Here’s their latest:

“Please be advice that we will contact our Omega Headquarters to ensure that a black leather crocodile strap is extra long length as requested.”

I guess that’s progress…

Bad communication, like you have described, is common today. Whether it is eBay or FedEx or Amazon or any big holding company in any modern business that replaces people with robots. I would look for what the options were for that model through private sources like this forum, and also for finding the actual bracelet you want.

I have a watch with them in Bienne. I began the process by emailing Omega USA (Swatch) in early summer. The replies I got were so horrible, I figured out how to email Omega directly in Switzerland. Once I got a reply, I've been dealing with the same lady since August (with at least a dozen emails). All replies are received within a day of sending mine. Its been an outstanding encounter so far. I mailed my watch directly to the repair facility in Bienne. Initially I was told there would be at least a 23 week duration before they started my overhaul (beginning in October). My representative told me she would try to get that time reduced. I just found out last week they have already begun work on my watch. I'm expecting it within the next few weeks.

Advice - figure out how to communicate directly with personnel in Bienne. Once you get that worked out, things go well. My rep told me she was assigned because she would translate any of my comments to the watchmaker in French.

Edit: To contact Omega in Bienne directly, google search "Switzerland google". Select the top line. From there, search "Omega Bienne". Once you go to the site, any contact you make from there, is read by the shop (as opposed to Swatch Group USA).

Revised EDIT: If you google "Omega Bienne" directly, you get linked with the flagship Omega shop in Bienne immediately. You can contact them directly from their site.

Agreed and thanks.

Are you by any chance the same johnireland that I used to see posting over on rennlist in the 996/997 forums?

Is there a 14K solid gold bracelet, or only gold plated or gold filled options? Which style is correct?

The most common and iconic bracelet seen on these is the seven-row BOR, or "beads of rice". These watches were supplied new on a strap and the buyer could purchase a bracelet as an accessory form the selling dealer. Not to say they don't exist, but I have never seen this style bracelet in solid gold. The most common would be 14K gold-filled center links with stainless steel outer links wrapped in gold, steel hinge and gold-plated clasp. If the watch was originally sold in the US, the bracelet would likely have been made there as well.

Thank you. That’s the look that I’m trying to achieve with the watch.

If anyone has this BOR bracelet with end links for sale, please reach out! 😁

So here are some similar watches from a 1967 UK Catalog:

p28.jpg

This page shows the separate bracelets available at the time with references to the different models and locations within the catalog for watches the bracelets were designed to fit.

p40.jpg

From what I can see, these bracelets were only available in steel and gold-plate. You could have them fitted to a solid 14K watch, but I don’t think they were ever made in 14K. You may be looking for something that never existed.

Hope this helps,

Not surprising they wouldn’t know which bracelet was originally paired with this watch. You asking would be akin to calling a Chevy dealership and asking what the part number was for the front bumper on a ‘58 Impala. But, the collector groups would know.

@janice&fred recently sold a Deville like this, the bracelet was optional to the sale so not sure if he still has it or if the person he sold it to wants to wear it or not.

Either way, perhaps Fred remembers the clasp and endlink #’s on it for your hunt.

Just woke up but I've got another one of these bracelets in our stash and will snap some pics of the #s later today when I dig it out.

Rolex USA is topping that list.

Ask me why I’m paying for their mistakes and any solution that would be satisfactory is an added quote rather than helping me out, their mentality is either say yes or take your Watch elsewhere.

so I’m stuck. Last time I serviced it I bought a replacement bracelet, but that bracelet was defective, the face and bezel weren’t lined up and the Watch was 20+ seconds fast. They are charging me for the replacement screw but every agent is different and they send me quote everytime I mention something else.
Swatch group is right up there, I wanted them to take a look at an issue with my bezel but they wanted to bill me 1k for the bezel insert and bezel since they do not sell them separately and an issue with the crown extending a bit was billed at 400 bucks citing a water sealant test everytime they opened the Watch.
