Hi I’m new to the forum and just acquired myself an unworn speedy from a grey dealer with all the big box, nato, spring bars and tool etc, guarantee Card is dated July 2020, would anyone know what year of manufacture it would be.
The reference is - 31130423001005
and serial number is 78874xxx

I believe the serial numbering for Speedmasters are separate from the normal Omega serial numbering system?....Using the normal Omega numbering that would put it at 2006 which doesn’t make any sense as such...but if the serial numbering system is different for Speedys what year would that put my speedy at please.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Andy

Hello and Welcome!
I am new here too - so before moving on - Any Omega Vetarans reading this - please correct me if I am wrong- Cheers

The Speedy Pro Moonwatch is awesome - congrats on your acquisition.
You are correct in that serial numbering for Speedmasters is little different from other Omega lines.
In fact, it is hard determining the exact year of production for the Speedy.
Some recommend ordering the Extract of Archives from Omega - it'll cost your around $150. Not sure if it is worth it that much for you to know the year of production. By the way that service is currently is not available in the US region - why? I am not sure. (As a side note I have been seeing some VPN services, that protect your PC from the outside by disclosing a different IP address - sometimes one of other countries).

On another note, my Speedmaster FOIS came in a cardboard box which had the year of production on it. Inside that cardboard box was the standard Omega Speedmaster box.

I assume your watch did not come with such a box.

It is unlikely than a grey dealer would keep a Speedmaster more than 10 years, so the extract of archives won't help and the request will be rejected.
The Speedmaster sold in 2010-2012 were in the 777xxxxx range based on what I found on several forums

Thanks for the reply.....yes the standard omega Speedmaster box did come in a brown cardboard box, like a shipping box with omega printed on it....I actually just threw it out as it just looked like an ordinary box....so yes that probably had the date on it like yours, it’s gone now so no luck with that.

The edition number on the instruction booklet used to be a fair indication of the year of manufacture, not sure if that's still the case.

Speedys have been in the 77-80m range since 2002, the most recent have just tipped into the 79m range, some omegas have gone over to an alphanumeric serial scheme of the form Axxxxxx but not AFAIK the Moonwatch as yet. You can pretty much extrapolate the serials from 2002 to today at roughly 100,000 per year meaning a 78.87m watch is from within the past 2 years. I have 2 data points which may help. My 2018 ST2 Speedy was on 78.81m and my 2017 ST1 was on 78.76m, thus yours is lilkely ~2018-19.

As already noted, the Extract of the Archives is only available pre 2000. Eugene's wonderful website, Ilovemyspeedmaster.com works from hard extract data so also stops in the late 1990s but a close estimation of date can be inferred using my method above, to within a year or 2 anyhow.

Thank you great call....looks like it’s from 2019 or there about...from the instruction book and the story of the moonwatch book that came with it.

They are now available for watches pre-2010 I believe (clause 2.6.2 below). 2003 Mitsukoshi and 2004 Japan Racing has now managed to get extracts, for example.

That’s pretty impressive - nailing it down to only 2 years Variance for the manufacture date. Hats off to to you sir.

I have one bought in Dec 2019 from an AD with a 78877xxx serial number. I believe it was a pretty fresh item in his inventory so likely made in 2019, as was the OP's.
