Corrosion??

Hi All
I have just bought this watch and I then noticed black marks on the back of the case and the side.

I am now slightly concerned that it might be corrosion?

What are people’s thoughts? Is it corrosion? Does it look to be a problem?

Thanks

I've had similar looking marks on watches I've bought and have usually managed to remove them with a wooden toothpick

Serious? Surely the seller would remove it if it were just dirt!

Not necessarily. Use alcohol or Naptha (lighter fluid) on a paper towel and a wooden stick (like a chopstick) and try to rub it off. If it’s raised, most likely it’s crud. If you feel pitting into the metal (a recess), then it’s corrosion. Even stainless can corrode with salt water or a previous with very low PH.

Ok good to know. I’ll test it when it arrives. Is that black marking typically the first visual sign of corrosion? I’ve never seen corrosion on a watch before so I don’t know how it starts to appear visually.
thanks

There are a few threads here on some funky filthy watches- some are really disgusting (body cheese is a term used often) but clean up well with some elbow grease and knowing what tools/chemicals/ techniques to use. Some crud is really pesky and not even an ultrasonic bath will shake jt loose- you need to basically scrape it off.

Stainless doesn’t corrode easily and it isn’t that common (more common on chrome plated watches), but it does happen. Most often right around the edges of the case back or under the lugs where a bracelet may trap crud & moisture. As is said, it usually is related to salt water trapped in places that stay damp or low body ph and daily sweat just eating away at the metal.
To directly answer your question, it’s very hard to tell sometimes from listing pics of its crud or corrosion. We hope for the best though.

Wouldn’t want to make a judgment on every mark, but this certainly just looks like some black crud.

Yeah, that’s the kind of stuff a toothbrush and alcohol can loosen up.

Tooth brush for the watch, alcohol for you for having to clean up someone else’s cheese 🤮

Thanks for that. How can some people sweat so much they literally melt metal!

Presumably on the areas I’m looking at it’s likely to be crud then because those areas aren’t the kind that can trap water. They’re not enclosed etc
