I think most of my best buys were filthy dirty
Absolutely, all my best watches looked like they were covered in muck and grime with nasty crystals. Filth comes off easy, aggressive polishing is forever.

Thanks for that. How can some people sweat so much they literally melt metal!
It’s not necessarily the amount of sweat, it’s the PH level of their sweat. Many things can affect ph genetically, but poor diet and heavy alcohol use (think culturally the 1950’s-80’s) doesn’t help.

There’s also the ubiquitous cigarette ash and the multitude of garbage in that which these watches have had dropped on them while people hold a durry in their left hand. On more recent watches it’s a lot rarer but vintage ones are frequently covered in it.

You’re starting to make me hope it’s actually corrosion instead!

No as in DONT buy aggressively polished watches or do that, it ruins the edges and lines

Yeah, cleaning is fine- polishing the case is not (polishing crystal is fine). And the watch is 99% most likely not waterproof anymore, so don’t put it under the faucet or soak it.
