Woops
·I recently acquired this stunning Universal Compax ref 12510 and wanted to share some pictures with the UG massive. The forum already already has one outstanding thread on this reference which can be found here and is an absolute cracker.
My watch has a calibre 287 inside its lovely Henri Jeanneret case in 18k solid yellow gold. The case measures just over 37mm and sports the trademark faceted lugs which seem to have been something of a speciality for this manufacturer (hammer 166).
The dial is two-tone white and grey-silver and changes with the light. I have tried to capture some of the magical 3D effect on this flat 2D page.
The Compax joins a beautiful Compur in my collection manufactured roughly one year earlier.
The case on the Compur is smaller at just under 35mm. There are many interesting differences I leave with you to enjoy. Personally, I love the difference in the colour of the gold, whether it is different patina acquired over the 80+ years or a difference in the actual gold, I can’t be sure.
As you can see from this vertical comparison below, the lugs extend further too, meaning the larger Compax case still retains its overall proportions. The Compax in tucked underneath with the ends of the lugs just poking out if you look carefully.
I find it so cool that two almost identical cases, with just mm between them, would be available to purchase side by side in the catalogue at the same time with different movements and dials inside them. Speaking of catalogues, here’s an original brochure from Christmas 1942 showing the same reference with, if I may say, a less dynamic dial option fitted.
Thanks for reading everyone - cheers!
