Send them a message, tell them you live nearby and will do local pickup.

Clearly, the seller in this case would say no, because that's how he's making his money. However there are also reasons for some legitimate sellers who would decline to allow pickup in person: fear of being robbed, the buyer being late/noshow, etc.

eBay charges 10% of the shipping charge. So it is basically the same fee-wise to the seller. Nothing gained.
In fact, in the Chiese Qing vase situation, the seller will actually end up paying more in fees if it ever sold as the 10% on shipping is not capped while the final value fees are...

Someone mentioned it above, that it would be less likely that the buyer doesn’t send the watch back to the seller and claiming the money back.

But do you still pay the shipping costs as a buyer who is return and claiming full amount back?
