Chrono suggestions for my quartz-loving wife?

Hey folks,

My 3 years on OF have netted me a princely 3 vintage Omegas with a sweet Certina on the way. With these few purchases (and my 3570 purchase in 2019), my wife never once questioned anything. “It’s your hobby, what can I say?”, she recently said, and without a hint of passive aggression. I love her. Beautiful, smart and accommodating.

She’s not much of a watch person, per se, and prefers quartz simplicity. She misses her MK chrono that she had for a couple of years; I knew it would pooch out in short order. Still, she loved it so I bought it (held my nose but hey, it was for her, not me).

So...now she sees a Tissot Tradition chrono on leather she likes. It’s a big watch but she likes the style. She refuses to entertain any watch over CDN $5/600 ‘in case she misplaces it or something’. Whatever.... I’m happy to indulge her. She’s 5’9” so could carry off anything up to 38/39mm.

So with that long winded preamble out of the way, what are your thoughts or suggestions on newer quartz chronos? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

For the record, she’ll be enjoying a milestone birthday in 2022. A 38mm Speedy is in the cards already.

Cheers!

Hey. If you browse through amazon, you may find many Seikos as quartz chronographs. One can find different colours and models and they retail in Europe for under 300 or sometimes even 200€.

My girlfriend is into chronographs as well for some reason and she also does not mind quartz, and even prefers it. I am also considering purchasing one for her as a gift, but through me she came to appreciate the value of some brands, specially Seiko, Casio and Omega.

She would like quartz but also would not like Fossil lol, even if would be a mechanical movement.

I like the Tissot Tradition Chronograph, and if she already has told you she likes the watch... get it. It is very classic looking and if she can handle a 39mm case, she can handle a 42mm case. If she likes the Tissot, I'd stay away from wild dials and stick to simple.

If you want to look elsewhere, I'd consider Hamilton, Seiko, Bulova, Movado and Citizen... all respectable brands of decent quality. Oversize watches are the trend and I think a 42/43mm may look good, have her try it on. Check them out... Seiko Essentials SSB342, Hamilton Khaki Aviation, Citizen Men's Chronograph Quartz Watch AN3625-07X, Movado Heritage Chronograph
... all under 600 USD

Agree on the Tissot ^^ I've handled a few when I went to look at watches for my friend. He ultimately went with a Tissot Le Locle for his wedding which was really cool.

Take her to a department store where she can try a bunch on the wrist.
PS there are true Seiko issued vintage chronographs that are quartz and quite good looking, and also classy vintage watches.

I love the nice big Tissot quartz Chronographs. We have a few too many of them so let me know and I can hook you right up with one for cheap! 👍

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate you all weighing in. It helps immeasurably. It is a birthday gift so something new is likely the way to go. Many, many thanks.

Those can be serviced, ya know.... quartz electromechanical movements have the same issues though albeit less often... the oil dries out, the pivots get all gummy. Unless the company refuses to service it, in which, tossarino, but worth an ask.

Agreed! But it was beyond saving and definitely time to sacrifice it to the recycling gods. Slowly but surely, she’s developing a taste for better made timepieces....

That's part of the "problem". Fit and finish can be accomplished so cheaply and stick a quartz movement in it, and paying more than Swatch prices is just insane. We're definitely talking commodity at this point, so there's no more reason to do much more than buy something out of a cereal box. You can get something pretty enough at Walmart, for example.

The true value, for anyone who actually values any of this, is in the unusual or the vintage, in my opinion.

Yup. I can't even understand the point of this thread if your wife already told you what she wants. :whipped:

She likes the style but that Tissot is massive. She tried my 3570 on for size and thought it too large. So... that’s why. 😁

Oops I might be a little over budget, I missed that we were talking Canadian dollars. Although it is not ridiculously over-budget.

The Bay runs sales (25% or more) on their watches every month or 2. Maybe she could check out their inventory online?

That Tissot might drop down to a price that she can live with.

I’ve always thought these look very good for their price
