Not at all. People needed watches back then. These were tool watches that cost maybe a couple of hundred dollars. The best tool watches in the 60's were GMT's and Subs, accurate, waterproof and resistant. Modern Rolex is jewelery. I don't think Che would have been seen dead wearing a rainbow daytona 😉
The Rolex "status symbol" stigma was certainly not what it was back then as it is today. I agree wholeheartedly that watches were certainly essential tools back in those days. Regardless of their motives, they certainly needed the best quality timekeeping tools to achieve their goals.

As always with historical photos, could You give a date (Month/Year) when these photos were taken ?
Probably summer 1962 ?

Isn't this the guy that murdered gay people because of their sexual orientation? If that's the case, I'll invoke Godwin and ask....what kind of watch did Hitler and his cronies wear? Surely there were some fine examples to be had from Glashutte!

Regardless which side of the political divide we sit, discussing watches worn by people of some sort of historical importance is surely valid for a watch forum without resorting to supporting or condemning their politics.
Condemning Fidel and Che is a little different as they were murders of their own people. It’s like admiring chairman’s maos watch. Anyway speaking of the political realm I was watching some of the hearings yesterday in the senate I was trying to pick out senators watches. It looked like Chief Justice Roberts was also sporting something nice but I didn’t catch any close ups where I could tell. Pelosi has something on but it was hidden behind the papers as she tore up the state of the union

Rolex didn't use that in their ads. That's fake.

Yes, and seeing as the OP posted that and wasn't aware, I'm guessing we are starting to see the OP's blindspot reveal itself. Shameful in this day and age.

I agree that I may sound a bit harsh in my viewpoints in this thread, but the thread was initiated as blatantly sympathetic to che which is preposterous.

I have no idea but I'd like to know. What makes you think it is from summer 1962?

I didn't intend to start any kind of political discussion, there are plenty of places to discuss politics elsewhere. This is a watch forum and I'm only interested in the watch. The fact remains that if Che's watch did ever come up for auction is would create huge media interest and possibly become the most expensive Rolex ever sold.

I'm not seeing the sympathy to Guevera in the OP at all.

The article is 6 years old and of some of the watches discussed I believe one or two have since turned up (Brandos Rolex) but interesting that Fidel's watch is on the list of "twelve of the Greatest missing watches" according to Hodinkee anyway !

it might be a bit of artistic license for hodinkee to say fidel's watch is "missing". Just because whoever happens to have possession of it now isn't showing it off doesn't mean it's missing. Not everyone assigns such significance to watches. 😁

True that although i read the article in a broader sense that they were missing from general circulation and Hondinkee would like them to be in the hands of someone who would appreciate them

Political views aside (yeah I know, nothing good can come from this opening), assuming those watches shown above were stolen is just too easy. Every biography on Fidel or Che you read shows that they had a lot of support from the people as they made their way north on the island.
Granted a lot of those were farmers, but it's not unreasonable to believe someone might have given them the watch.

I can't prove that's what happened, just like anybody else on here can't prove they were stolen.

Back to the watches, I hope they stay hidden, as it wouldn't be right for them to be sold for huge amounts of money. That's just my opinion.

and that's typical of hodinkee to assume they know better who would appreciate them than whoever owns them now. 😁

Guevara was not some sort of cult hero to be revered. I wonder what kind of watch Manson wore?

I don’t know about Manson but...

To answer that question, it was Lange of course. If you visit the museum in Glashütte, they do not revel in that part of their history as it relates to watches, but neither do they hide from it. One example...

They treat the Soviet era the same - not hiding from it or keeping it tucked away in some shameful manner, but are simply honest about that time period as it relates to watches. Watches are the subject of the museum, and this thread, after all...

Well these two guys wearing them goes against what they preached but who am I to judge
Wrong. They dint have phones to tell time back then. And these watches werent that costly back then.
