I just noticed an inordinate number of users have a cat avatar.
Did I miss an announcement?
It was very confusing for a few moments, are these the new default avatar?

If so, I'm amused. @Archer must be reaching for his meds though.

No official changes, just some gentle encouragement for members who have never set one 😁

Making them random defaults would be amusing too

I like my random avatar though. It reminds me I have a Seiko 56KS with a broken star(quickset) which I need to get swapped eventually. 😂

If cats become mandatory, I would rather it's my cat and not a generic one.

I don’t understand why people like cats so much.
To be fair there’s lot of cats that are dicks (or psychos). Some have dog-like personalities while being less needy and lower maintenance. I like those. I also like that they’re more picky about their friends and they never forget if someone was mean to them.

Your avatar's great, we're not changing any for people that have picked one. 😄

It can be hard to understand if you don't spend a bit of time with one/ some. They don't take shit, they're not happy to just be in a room with you, most are independent, etc. They can be very affectionate, but they have to accept you (i.e., you have to earn their trust).

The people who tend to not like them the most are the people who want them to act like dogs. Or the ones who get jealous about what the cat gets away with versus what their spouse/ SO lets them do. Sit in the chair and sleep through the day on Saturday or Sunday? Good luck getting away with that one...

And I know enough to not rub my ass in my wife's face, but damn if the cat isn't considered cute for doing the same thing. 😹

Because cats are life(and before watches were invented you could tell time by their purring, 1 purr per second). Even if it's one like mine - a a vengeful psychocat. The assumption that you adopt a cat is wrong. The cat merely adopts you and lets you be its servant.

Seriously though, cats have incredibly different personalities. Some are very needy while others are independent and don't care. Some would never scratch you and others see you as a pincushion. There are cats which like being taken out like dogs even. Every cat is unique.

Out of curiosity - who is on your avatar if not a secret? It reminds me of a Japanese maid cafe or so.

For us non cat lovers, none of the above sounds like a positive.
The main reason I’m not a cat lover is that every morning I have to check my garden for cat shit before my children can play in it, and if I miss any, more than once I’ve had to deal with shitty hands.
Perhaps I should feeL blessed the neighbours cat has chosen my garden to do its business but it certainly doesn’t feel that way.

People who don’t like cats have never had the pleasure of being in the presence of a Maine Coon.

Love cats, but nothing worse than those ones left roaming around the neighbourhood. Super frustrating.

That sounds more like an asshole neighbor. They could just keep their cat indoors if it's pooping in your garden. A dog could do the same btw or even worse - like biting you. When I was a kid there were neighbors with aggressive dogs. Of course I don't hate dogs in general, but I do hate the aggressive ones. Definitely would have preferred cat poo over getting dog bites. Even more terrifying when you are a kid chased by a huge dog.

So just saying - it's s not a general issue with all cats. And if you had one to yourself, you would train it to use a litterbox and deworm it every month or two so hygiene wouldn't be an issue. Most cats are very clean animals and groom themselves to perfection. There are always exceptions though.

That's a man made problem in many countries - people just abandoning their pets and so on. Ditto with dogs. Much worse when they make a pack and become aggressive. I believe it's not something people can resolve individually - you need a pet police and good shelters, basically punishing people for animal abuse and then taking the animals off the street. Problem is many countries in Europe ain't doing it at all.
