Cannot tighten 321 stem holding screw!!

After pushing the crown stem back in place on my older Speedie, the screw holding the crown stem no longer tightens and appears to be sitting too high. And if course, if I can't secure the stem I cannot wind up the spring or adjust the time!

Help please!! Is this just an issue with the screw not sitting/mating properly or is it to do with the gears? Perhaps someone can anyone share how the gear mechanism inside works?

Thanks!

My guess is that you鈥檝e loosened it too far which will now require reassembly. Hope I鈥檓 wrong 馃憥

Oh boy! It needs a full service so during the process of rebuilding the movement I'm guessing that would be fixed (i.e. I've not broken anything?).

You鈥檝e not broken anything? How can you be certain? It may be the detent screw has been loosened too far, the threaded tip unscrewing from the set lever (detent). Or it could be the threaded tip of the detent screw has broken off. Either way, you are in for a significant repair bill.

Ask Archer he will know, dont get upset I hope it more simple than the implications above but if not I would trust Archer with the service or repair

@Archer has already helped me just based upon his comments is that previous posts I looked through and now I'm understanding more on which screw has most likely been over-loosened from the image I found below. I'll ask my watchmaker to look at it tomorrow as I'll leave the hand/dial removal to the pros. I would be interested to see a movie or schematic of how the stem mechanism moves to set the time.

This video clearly mentions not to unscrew the screw all the way as it will create the need to remove dial and hands as others have mentioned above.

Curious... where is Archer located?

Ahhhhh, good old hindsight!!!

Better to mess it up today (and learn) the day before I see my watch guy, rather than next week!

May I ask why you loosened it initially? Were you decasing the movement?

The mistake many make is not pressing down on the screw. The setting bridge arm which sits on the edge of the setting lever and acts like a little spring.

One should unscrew half a turn, press down on the screw and gently try to pull the crown and stem out. If it doesn't come out. 1/4 turn more and press down.

Most just keep unscrewing until the screw comes out of the setting lever. Might be able sometimes to screw it back in if you don't press too hard, but once you push the barrel of the lever out of its placement hole.

Have to remove the dial to get it back on

My little friend is safely back with me with both setting lever, setting screw and crown stem reconnected. My watchmaker was adding a missing spring to a pusher (@redzer007 ) & cost a whopping $100!! ( @Canuck )

And now I know to only turn that screw a mere 1/4 or half turn as I continue my learning on watch repairs and tinkering. Many thanks to those helpful folk on the forums who identified and educated this issue! 馃榾
