Bless your heart...馃榾

Between my wife and I, we have had many opportunities to move to the US (several states involved, including some with very nice weather)

...

She currently works for a US based company, and I used to work for one.

...

When she moves up another level, there will once again be pressure for her to move to the US, and once again we will sit down and discuss it as we always do. Most likely we will stay in Canada - not everyone wants to live in the US thanks...

Cheers, Al

Sounds quite similar to my wife and I. We live in Ontario along the southernmost border to the US. My wife commutes across the border everyday and my office is also in the US (although I spend most of my time traveling or working from home). We have often debated making the move to the US but my wife vey much likes living in Canada and doesn't want to move. A few years ago when the Canadian dollar was at par to the USD and real estate prices in the US had collapsed, we could have made a huge financial gain by moving but she still preferred to stay here.

If you have never driven the Road to Hana, here's a cell phone video I shot to show what the road is like...

Cheers, Al

Thanks for sharing the video! Looks very unfamiliar to a Canadian and yet so similar to many roads in Europe (especially England/Wales/Scotland).

I have yet to identify this bird...

Or this one:

@Archer great pics, thanks for sharing. The first bird picture is a pied Avocet...logo of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protecion of Birds) the second wader could be a Green Sandpiper or something similar. Cheers

Well you didn't have to move - you could have bought a house on the cheap and resell it now that the US market has picked up, and our dollar has dropped relative to the USD. I should have done that and was considering picking up a house in AZ...oh well...too late now.

But on the moving front - money isn't everything, and one's definition of paradise can be quite varied. I value quality of life here over weather generally, and as much as I loved Hawaii and the Big Island in particular, I would miss the change of seasons...

Well sort of. 馃槈

But for me real paradise is Northern Ontario...

Yeah - we debated this but owning a second property means taxes and maintenance fees while waiting to resell. Of course, no one knew the USD would rise as far and fast as it has either... Luckily for us, we both earn in USD and spend mostly in CAD so we're making "hay while the sun shines" so to speak.

I hear this from a lot of people around here. Not true for me, but the only way I can move is without my wife, and so therefore I happily stay here. I have many opportunities for ex-pat assignments around the world and my wife has no interest. I love the idea of adventure and exploration in new countries/cultures, but not without her!

Do you have your own place up North? I've been to camps and cottages with other people but we don't have our own.

My wife and I are planning a boat trip along the Trent Severn waterway later this year with our 11 year old daughter. We haven't decided whether to rent a houseboat there or rent a vehicle to tow our 30' Cruiser instead. Either way, it will be a cool way to spend a week in Northern Ontario (maybe not as far "North" as what you're talking about, but it's 5+ hours drive for us...)

Are you in Cali? I once had an opportunity to go to our only location in California and the perfect year-round weather simply wouldn't persuade my wife to move somewhere where we could only afford a one-bedroom house... 馃槈
