Can a Speedmaster be a proper dress watch?

You can dress up a lot of watches with the right strap.
This is true, and no other watch i've owned handles so many replacement straps with the aplomb of the Speedmaster. You can change the entire character of the watch by going from fabric to leather. Chocolate, black, crocodile pattern, suede, Corween, anything.

If a chronograph is made for working, I don't see it as a dress watch. Same with a diver, including Seamasters and Submariners.

I don’t see any issues with wearing a Speedmaster as a dressy watch, especially when it’s on the right leather strap.

I believe a good diver or chrono like the speedy can be used with any clothing - I do some black tie and don’t hesitate to use a Rolex/ Tudor diver or omega chrono with it.

Yeah, I would not hesitate to wear my Speedmaster with a tux with in on a leather strap. Perhaps I'm gauche. But frankly I think that a Speedmaster on a strap is far dressier than a Submariner on a bracelet. So that whole chart from the first page is circumspect to me 😀

1964 105.003 “Echo Whiskey” with church clothes for usher duty today...good times! 👍

LATE ENTRY: The reason that I don’t appear to be experiencing “good times” in the first pic below is because I was late for usher duty...I missed the memo regarding the change in service times for the summer schedule...therefore, my fault. For the record, I was NOT fired from the usher team for my tardiness. 👍

Can we just take a moment to look at those shoulder pads? I can't decide if MD is harking back to Dynasty or looking forward to Wilma Darling (Deering) ...

.... either way, well done on just making it your own 😉

Of course you can wear your Speedmaster with your tuxedo. You can also take a Range Rover to a track day - that won't make it a race car though.

I have no problem wearing my speedy as a dress watch. Fits nicely under the cuff, not an overly busy piece, no flashy tones, and most importantly...I love it!

Just to clarify, I have no problem wearing it with whatever you see fit. I wore my FOIS to a lunch interview. To paraphrase the above, that doesn't make it a dress watch.

Avoid the debate and get more watches to cover any occasion. I like and use formal watches and casual tool watches.

The bracelet is a correct 7912 with correct #6 end links.
As far as I’m concerned / that combo is a dress watch thru and Thur! Also Fri.

Can look dressy on a strap but a toolwatch cannot pass for a dress watch IMHO. This is like wearing black leather sneakers with a suit, you're not fooling anyone.. 😀. I'll admit a croc strap on a Speedy is my favorite look, especially this one.

Speedy on the leather looks good with anything! If some people are wearing subs with suits 🤮, sure enough you can wear a speedy!

You ‘can’ do anything. Doesn’t make it correct. A Speedy on a strap may be a nice look, but that doesn’t make it a dress watch. A wise man once said: “Yes you can. You can also fart in a crowded elevator, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea...”

You are right mate, but if OP would've ask : "Is Speedmaster a dress watch?"- I would've say NO. The question was : "Could it be a dress watch?"- I'm saying YES to that one.

my 2 cents. . speedies (even vintage) are just too big to be a dress watch although if you want to wear one with a suit--go for it! with a tux--absolutely not, this really must be a time only watch that will fit under shirt sleeves

that said, a 36mm vintage movado m90/m95 or a vintage patek or vintage daytona which are chronos but smaller size can be spectacular dress watches (but i still wouldn't wear them with a tux)
