Can’t get a Seamaster Quartz; what do I do?

Hello all,

I absolutely LOVE my SMPc and wear it just about every single day for every type of activity. However, I have to demagnetize it at least once per week, sometimes more often. I don’t know exactly what is causing it, but it only happens on days/weeks when I am working.

I lately started wearing a quartz field style watch to work, and switch to my SMPc every evening. I have since not had any issues with either of them. This tells me that whatever is magnetizing my Seamaster is just strong enough to do it, but not strong enough to affect a quartz watch.

I REALLY miss wearing my Seamaster at work, and miss having a dive style watch in general. I looked into finding a preowned Seamaster quartz, but with a baby on the way and being in the middle of hail damage repairs on my house, I can’t swing that cost right now.

Are there any quartz diver options out there that give the same vibe as the Seamaster, with similar dimensions, but at an affordable cost?

I’m looking for 41mm diameter, 20mm lug width, not razor thin, and under $500usd.

I tried on different options from Tissot, Citizen, and Seiko, but the ones with the correct diameter were way too thin, and the ones with a good thickness were way too wide. In both groups, most had 22mm lugs.

Anyone have any decent options?

Here is the watch, mine was a beater so it was beaten to heck but it was very similar to a seamaster in case shape etc.

I´d look into a vintage Seiko 7548 diver. Bulletproof and serviceable movement. It has 22mm lugs, though.

Have you googled around for quartz dive watches under $500? So many cool microbrand options.

I like the look of Scurfa, and have owned really nice quartz divers from Hamilton and Vaer.

That would be exactly what I’m looking for, but it looks like they don’t make it anymore.

I forgot about Scurfa!!!! Too bad they are always out of stock and go for outrageous prices on the secondary market 🙁

How about a pre bond seamaster?

They’re probably just within your budget.

Going off your username, this is an obvious question but do you work around an MRI machine?

No they don’t, but I found it on eBay second hand for like $50

I would love that, but I have never seen them that cheap.

Plenty in the UK have auctions that end under £500

I’m in the US, though, and even if I could get it shipped, £500 is about $630 USD. Add shipping and I’m way over budget.

I assume there’s no chance of you selling off your 41mm (which could potentially get you 2500 to 3k-ish) and then putting those funds toward a newer gen SMPc? Those are rated to 15,000 gauss. Preowned they can be had for 3500. Heck of a way to mark the arrival of the kid!

If you're going to spend $500 on a quartz Seamaster rip-off, maybe you can find a way to save up another $500 and buy a pre-owned quartz Seamaster. It just seems a little short-sighted to spend $500 on something that you don't really want, that will have virtually zero re-sale value.
