Buying a vintage Rolex 16014 Datejust advice

Hi all - was hoping for some advice on a Rolex datejust I am thinking of buying for my wife's birthday which is coming up. She likes larger watches so 36mm as in this case is ideal. I started my search for one from her birthyear (1978) but haven't been able to find any decent examples so I have given myself some latitude on that. I have recently come across the below 2 watches, from the same seller on chrono24. Would appreciate any advice/pointers on whether these are decent or not.

They look ok to me and seller has good reviews but buyer beware and all that

I also think the blue is a more masculine (and therefore less suitable), what do others think?

Since your preference seems to be for the black face, let’s deal with that one. I assume the pictures are from the seller. Several things jump out at me. The recess where the case back gasket fits is either dirty, or the black In the bottom of the recess is corrosion. If it is dirt, why would the watch be presented that way? If it is corrosion, you should probably walk away. The rotor arbor has been dragging on both the inner case back (plating worn off the head of one of the three rivets on the rotor), but also on the bridge over the self wind components as indicated by the plating worn off. These wear points are only the wear points that can be easily seen. Worn mainspring barrel bearings, worn mainspring barrel arbor bearings, worn balance staff pivots. These are only a few of the areas that should be checked over before you lay out your money. About adjusting the bracelet size to a woman’s wrist. Between the removable links, and the adjustment in the buckle, can the watch be adjusted to fit her? If the life expectancy of this watch is, say, 30 years, reasonably, how do you feel about it already being half used up?

Thanks for the feedback/pointers. Really appreciate it. Seller claims their "watchmaker has serviced it" but I get that doesn't mean much. It would suggest the black parts are corrosion though, I'll confirm that point. Regarding the wear elsewhere, would you walk away as a result? It's a 40yr old watch so to me that's not entirely unreasonable but I may be wrong on that. Bracelet I'm not so worried about as I assume it's sized to fit a man therefore making it smaller shouldn't be a problem.

It's surprisingly hard to find a decent example of these datejusts from that period! Also so many sellers have crappy photos in bad light or only showing one or 2 sides and not the movement etc etc and don't do much or any better even when asked. At least the seller above provided lots of photos which helps

Knowing what I know about Rolex, I would walk on either of these two. Should you walk away on either of these? That depends on your expectations, and the price of the watch. You mentioned it is a 40-year old watch. How many un-used miles remain in the watch, do you suppose? I would suggest you ask for a detailed report on what his watchmaker replaced when he serviced the watch. To clean a watch movement and re-cycle the original worn parts is a job half done. These watches appear to both have the older calibre 3035 movement, and acrylic crystals. You might be better off going for the newer Date-Just with the calibre 3135 movement, and the sapphire crystal. Chances are it wouldn’t have the mileage on it that either of the subject watches appear to have on them. The extra cost might well be worth it.

These watches both have the Jubilee bracelet on them. What doesn’t show in the pictures is the amount of wear of the links in the bracelets. You don’t seem to be concerned as to whether these bracelets could be sized down to fit a woman’s wrist. It depends on her wrist size, but fitting the watch to her could be a concern.

In short, With those cases corroded the way they appear to be, can either of them be properly sealed?

I would rule out the Black dial based on the damage to the 5 o’clock lug - scratches and nibbles on the ourside lug edge

why not buy a brand new one for your wife, but then again, I dont get this obsession with birth year watches !!!

Thanks guys, have decided I'll let these be as your points are valid

Regarding getting a newer, or new, one, it's a question of cost primarily as I can't afford or justify the outlay at this time. The birth year watch was an idea to a) make it more affordable and b) give it a more personal touch. Make of that what you may!

But I'm also running out of time now as the day is coming up so I'm going to take my time on this and when/if I find one I will buy it and hide for the next special occasion.

In the meantime she has a Seamaster Aqua Terra with a leather strap and I know she wants a bracelet for it so I've decided I'm going to buy her a new one. Ticks the box as a nice gift, takes away the time pressure and is way cheaper 😀

If you don’t buy new at least buy newer. You pay either by depreciation or by repairs. But either way you pay. Rolex watches don’t last forever, and you have to wonder how much longer a 40 year old one is going to last, and how much it will cost you to keep it running long past it’s best before date.

bought vintage datejust before, first one wasnt bad, left in a trade. second one put a lot more money into it then i thought i would for repairs and service. the case corrosion, service, jubilee stretch they warned you about are serious concerns and will take additional funds to repair if you do go that route. buy 90s datejust if you can. itll have the updates and less headaches
