What about a nice entry omega geneve. Very doable within budget, nice 35mm and solid omega. It's handwinding though...
I believe the Geneves are easily one of the best priced vintage Omegas out there - a lot of bang for your buck if you ask me. I would definitely second this suggestion if she wants to stick with Omega as a manufacturer.

@japaneseanemones do you have an eBay account? Curious where you are looking/finding potential examples to buy?

Some more great suggestions. Just bear in mind that any watch bought outside the EU is subject to import tax etc on the value of the watch and the cost of the shipping. So before you know it a $400 watch has cost you £460-500 once in your hand.

Do not dismiss new watches , there’s always a deal to be had even with high street retailers/jewellers and some may offer a a slight discount and free finance if that suits you for the right watch.

A entry level Longines Presence is a classy looking watch for ca £500, https://www.longines.co.uk/watch-presence-l4-819-4-12-2

the slightly more expensive and more sporty Conquest has a nice blue dial (also black and light versions with bracelets or leather straps)

...Since your husband is an engineer and you are posting from the UK I would suggest a Smiths Watch...
Excellent 👍

As gearhead who appreciates all things mechanical, I second the reccomendation for the Alpina that @Alpha has available. It is in better condition than any Omegas that will be found at that price point.

I think this is a lovely idea, but for Vintage Omegas, that price range is challenging for someone without significant experience and knowledge. The vast majority of nice looking pieces will be badly flawed from a collectible perspective. In ways that will not be easy for a novice to recognize. Perhaps an experienced OF member has an appropriate piece to pass on the OP. If not, I second the suggestion of a vintage style new watch.

When you give your husband a watch, he will either:

a) fall in love with having a watch, and then he might enjoy getting another in the future. You could get a new one to start...
- reliable, no unknown service costs...
- I've had 9 vintage watches serviced in the past few years, and how a watch looks or seems to run is little indication on what the condition is of the watch itself
- ... and then can always get another vintage one later if he wants. Many brands make great vintage-esque watches, with many doing various throw-back models that hearken back to the good old vintage days...

b) wear it and enjoying it more because you bought and gave it to him. Again, a new one would be good to start with.

Of course you know your husband better than any of us, and if you're sure he'll appreciate a vintage watch much more, I would suggest saving a little more and/or being very patient to find just the right one.

Good luck, and your husband is very lucky to have you!

These can be had for a cheap price and are all mechanical.
