Buy or not?

Hi!
Newbie here looking to buy my first Omega vintage. I’ve done a lot of research the last couple of days, but my knowledge is still quite sparse.

I’ve come across this Omega Automatic 166.002 from 1964 at a local dealership (trustworthy as far as I know). Stated to be in very good condition, complete with box, original papers and cleaning cloth. Cal 560. They ask for aprox $1400. Newly serviced with 1 year warranty.

Seems like a steep price, but I find it hard to compare with other vintages because it comes with of all the extra goodies. What do you guys think?

Hello,

In my opinion, the watch is well overpriced, can't really say from the pictures, but the case seems to have been polished a bit. For the "goodies", the cleaning cloth is not worth much, the box perse, I don't believe it is s corresponding one for the watch model, and paper, well, same as the box.

If you're happy to pay that amount of money, I'd recommend to have a look at the forum private sales section, or continue your hunt for something better.

I believe you might need to continue searching and reading throughout the forum here to further increase your knowledge.

As above. Way too much at $1400 your looking at a $700 watch and probably $900 at a dealers

$1400 gets you a nice thick lugged Seamaster

Dealer prices can never be compared to private sales. That is their bread and butter and they pay (should at least) taxes, rents, pension funds and other bills as company owners. You also get warranty and some other benefits like paying with credit card, receipt etc.

As a collector I very rarely buy from dealers unless it's something quite unusual and very attractive. That said, I don't think this watch falls oin to that category but it's a nice looking watch and if you like it and you are worried about taking risk when buying from private person then go for it.

But as an example, I sold this one here last week and yes, it doesn't come with papers, box and warranty but still way better deal in my opinion 😀

Good luck!

Looks like a nice watch and certainly a collectors set. I personally think that Box and Papers are more important for really high end collectible pieces, and on't interest me that much for entry-level pieces. But if the accessories appeal to you personally, that's what matters, and you should probably buy it. You don't come across them very often.

But you probably should compare with your other options at that price point. You could get a more desirable Seamaster with a bracelet for substantially less, and you are even getting into Constellation territory, if they appeal to you.

Find a vintage full set is not so usual.
I think u should understand if u really like this “basic” model.
IMO At this price u could find more collectible and particular ref.
