Omega Constellation Pie Pan 168.005 1964: Real or Not?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking at buying this Omega Constellation 168.005 and these are all the photos I currently have from the seller.
He says the watch is from 1964, and based on the serial number, the movement, the case, and the caseback (168.005) it seems to line up with that period - but since this is my first vintage Omega, I’m a bit nervous and really want to understand what I’m getting into.

So I’d love your input:
  • What do you think about the dial?
  • Does the printing, minute track, star, date window look correct?
  • Is the crown right for this reference?
  • Anything else that stands out as non‑original or replaced?
I really want to learn more about the vintage Omega world before taking the plunge, so any advice or observations would be super helpful.

Thanks a lot!

Dial is correct, but badly damaged
Case has wear can’t see lugs very well.
Crown looks original.
Hard pass due to bad dial IMO.

OP......you are at the heart of knowledge on Constellations and really all things Omega.....there are long dedicated threads with many pictures of original Constellations, Seamasters, etc on which to learn.

That dial is horrible. Unless this is dirt cheap, like £200 I can’t see why anyone would be interested in buying it.

It also looks to be missing the bezel, which is a big issue.

I feel like two out of three new members are desperate to buy a 168.005, no matter how awful it is. What is going on out there? Is there some reddit influencer making everyone go crazy?

People, it's just one reference out of hundreds and hundreds. Slow down and look around.

At this point I think it’s just popular on social media in general. Vintage watches are also getting more popular so the unique design coupled with a relatively available mass produced watch make it popular. I keep on seeing people rave about the dog legs + pie pan + Genta-designed (allegedly).

I think the crown is wrong actually, the right one is way smaller than that.

I think it’s right - but it looks large due to the missing bezel.

This. ^

Welcome @whigr
It’s great that you are looking at Constellations but this example is a real dog.
Some folks like patina but this is simple damage and with the missing bezel it is a non starter.
As noted above dig into the threads on Constellations or immerse yourself in Desmond’s blog

As others have mentioned on this thread OP, many people seem to be jumping in to buy a pie pan Connie lately. That’s great, but examples like this are a terrible buy. I’d liken it to buying a badly crash damaged car. But even then the watch world treats things differently. The 0.1% who buy a crash damaged car and can repair it, good for them. But most collectors in watches like originality.

Second thing here is that, yes it’s not about value retention etc but if you ever find yourself in a tricky spot and need to sell, this is going to be worth next to nothing and take long to sell unless it’s at bargain basement prices.

Lastly, when I set out on my vintage watch collection journey around 10 years ago I purchase a C case constellation. It was cheap. But it was a dog. Barely ran, my watchmaker just about got it running, the case was soft and over polished. It was only after I sold it for peanuts due to the condition I realised I should’ve bought a better condition example. Trouble is, I had to learn what a good condition example looked like.

I haven’t been on the forum all that long as a member but have been studying threads in the forum and others for years. It’s an absolute minefield vintage omega. Be careful, take your time, don’t buy this! You’ll end up regretting it.

I can only speak for myself. I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for a 167.005 or a 14900. I like the architectural quality of the dial, its simplicity and clarity and yet extravagance. It’s striking and recognizable, an iconic watch. I especially like the steel versions with crosshair and onyx. I have a background in art and design and haven't been interested in watches for very long. My preferences will certainly change over time, but right now it's this watch I'm drawn to!

If you like the dogleg case and are looking for simplicity and clarity, then try the dome dial rather than the pie pan.
It is the epitome of simplicity and elegance, without any of the extravagant brouhaha of the pie pan.
Whilst the pie pan is indeed iconic, the dome dial is so much more wearable than the pie pan which often feels fussy and brash in comparison.

As I said, I like the extravagant design of the pie pan. But the dome dial, with a bor band, is indeed also very beautiful.

FWIW, I wasn't really asking why particular people like the dog-leg/pie-pan Constellations, some people have always liked them. Others prefer a 14381 or 2852. Still others like the beefy lug Seamasters or the delicate SMDV, or even the funky space-age Dynamic.

Except maybe for the insanity around Speedmasters in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing or the interest in black-dial SMDVs during Mad Men (both of which were understandable), I don't recall a frenzy around a particular model quite like what has happened in the past 6 months or so with the 167/168.005. That's really what I was referring to, sort of an obscure meta question for long-time collectors.
