Happy anniversary to the "other" moon watch! 50 years ago today Apollo 15 Commander Dave Scott wore a prototype Bulova on his last EVA. We all know the story of how the Bulova Lunar Pilot ultimately came to be but it doesn't make the date any less interesting. I love mine as much as my Speedy.

I find myself very tempted by one of these.

Just wish that it matched the dimensions of the original, and that the non-date was available with a brushed case... and if they could fit a mechanical movement too, that would perfect. 😁

All of that would be nice, although sources say that the prototype had a 44mm case, which is barely different. Also, the quartz movement is just stupid accurate and never needs winding. I really like mine and I didn't think I was going to for the very differences you describe. The only thing I would change is to have the springbar holes drilled the same as the strap version. I have curved bars for when I'm feeling strappy but don't love them. You'd think in the Space Age they could just have two sets of holes...

So, you are saying you want a Speedmaster. 😎

No... I'm saying I'd like one of the prototypes that Universal Geneve made 😁
I’m just kidding with you. I agree that when most reissues come out, they miss the boat. Bulova did the same with the 666 reissue, they were sooooo close, but they bumped it up by 3mm and lost the red second hand. They have corrected that on more recent iterations, so let’s hope that they do the same for this….although mechanical movement is not likely.

If I got one, I would be tempted to do the fauxtina thing and put it on a velcro strap like this guy on reddit did

Same... although I'm not sure I could stomach buying two watches to have the parts to build the one I'd like to end up with.

If this were mechanical I'd have one in a nanosecond. Bulova seems ripe for being the next renaissance brand, with a huge back catalog of wonderful vintage designs that bring big money whenever they show up at auction. I mean, a new (mechanical) Marine Star chrono would be a sensation I think.

Agreed. And being owned by Citizen, they have the in-house capability to pretty much do anything they want when it comes to movements

You'd have two customs when you were done. Somebody would probably like to have the other one for its uniqueness...?

I'd have also spent £800 on Bulova chronographs to mod... which doesn't seem sensible!

Thats a lot of cash to flash with little collector return in years to come.

Maybe, but hobbies aren't usually sensible.

Hmm… I’ve never observed the “set money on fire” hobby uptake regime… I like to know that if I decide to get back out, losses will be marginal.

Gotcha. I don't buy things as investments so I need to bow out of this discussion. Cheers!

This isn't about "investments", it's about being mildly sensible with money! 😗

For example, when I took up golf, I bought a good second hand set of clubs for about 1/3 the price of a brand new set... just in case i was terrible/hated it and then needed to sell the clubs later on. Because why lose 30% on something nearly new when you can maybe get most of your money back on something old?

With watches, my view is that I might change my mind at a later date and decide to sell, I may well lose some money doing that, and that's ok.

Losing lots of money - not so much.

So I'm not going to buy two £400 watches, to build one that I kinda like.

That's not to say that I won't buy one, get bored of it and sell it for a loss at a later date (or give it away), there's just a limit to how much dumb money setting on fire I'm willing and able to do! 😁
