I think that's exactly what they're doing. I expect more info in September or October after all the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary celebrating is done with.

They are making sure all the steel 50ths get sold first and out the door. First things first and all that. Then nobody Bob's over to another watch waiting list.

Doh, I wasn’t looking at the date from an historical perspective but assumed that 21st was when Omega had a booked press day or something 😬

How stupid can one feel ::facepalm1::

No worries - unlike the wedding birthday - now that’s one date you won’t forget. 😁

Heh, I forget that one all the time. Thankfully I have it written down. But this is the second one I have had to remember -- it gets harder as they pile up 😁

Not sure how this relates, because if tooling has to be made it has to be made. It wouldn't matter if Breguet or Omega need to make it.

If the movements are that different, why (according to this story) would Omega even bother asking Breguet to make them?

None of this seems particularly logical or likely IMO...

I agree with you that the tomography is more about marketing purpose.

However, reading the 321 press release, people seemed to get it wrong when thinking that the tomography is used for solving the difficulty in re-creating 321. What Omega said:

Using the 2nd generation Calibre 321 as a reference, the OMEGA team compiled extensive historical research and original plans to reconstruct the movement as accurately as possible. Going even further, they also used “tomography” technology (digital scanning method) to see inside the true Speedmaster ST 105.003 timepiece that astronaut Eugene “Gene” Cernan wore on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Cernan was the last man to walk on the lunar surface and his Speedmaster is now housed at the OMEGA Museum in Bienne. Its Calibre 321 provided the perfect design criteria for OMEGA to follow.

As a result, even the most unique and iconic parts of the Calibre 321 have been reborn in respect to their authentic specifications. The movement wonderfully corresponds to the “moon period” of OMEGA’s history, with a construction that completely respects the designs from the past.

So they actually have the original plans of 321 movement in their hands, and the tomography is just an additional step to ensure all parts are recreated with the exact specs.

Thread necromancy.

Not sure what tomography would gain. That is useful for seeing inside sealed items. Photogrameritry, is what is often used to convert 2D data into three dimensions. Laser photogrameritry and structured light are what is mostly used in the shouty documentaries of archeological nonsense.

In the old days optical comparitors were used. What was really lost was the institutional knowledge. Surface treatments, Tool and die wear etc.

Damn. I thought this was a new thread. Was ready for a 321 in professional. :astroturf:
