Hi, I don’t know anything about this watch I just bought apart from that it works. Can u guys tell me anything about it? What is it made of? What’s it worth? What even is it? Says La Generale Luce De LOUIS BRANDT & FRERE on the gold coloured face and on the inside of the back panel. Any help would be grand!

hi, yeah I got a few pics, the rusting is like black spots, but what’d you expect, it’s apparently Victorian. Other than the rust though it all works well, time changes, it winds smoothly and the ticking is almost hypnotising! My other Victorian watch is broken so I bought this

There should be a little notch or spot to get something like a small screwdriver or something similar to pop the dust cover off. Using something like cellophane tape on the screwdriver or knife with help with not scratching. Also, when you apply pressure, need to really control it.

Thin knife blade or razor blade is good but one must be careful and be in control

Yeah if it’s too stubborn I’ll leave it, do you think it’s worth taking to an expert to get it properly ID’d and valued?

I'd get some good pix and post them here and go from there......it will be of modest value because of the damage to the case/dial and hands. Cool nontheless.

Okay, I’ll try and open it if possible and if I do I’ll get some pics

@Alprini, you asked for help identifying your watch. As you see, there are people ready to help you - and there will be more. Your watch could also be of interest to people on this forum.

Two things would help (would be essential): a photo of the movement of the watch and the case number (which will probably have 6 digits and will be on the inside of the caseback). Also, what is the diameter of the watch?

Opening the caseback (should!) not be possible with fingernails. @Vinz Clortho and @TexOmega gave you some tips on opening the caseback - be careful but it really shouldn’t be too difficult.

You talked about getting an ID from an expert - you won’t find better ‘experts’ than you can find here.

We are ready to help you - but must help us first!

Okay, unfortunately I do not have the tools right now to open the back to see the movement of the watch, but if you give me 1 week, I am going to take it to a watch place to get it opened up (hopefully), so that I can show you guys the inside!

Good news! So three requests (as above): 1. A photo of the movement. 2. The case number. 3. The diameter. Good luck...
