Blame Rolex for this...;-)

3 to 6 months apparently...
First off, I don’t intend to be mean, so let me say “Congrats” on the great watches you picked up!
Now, my next comment: 3 to 6 months isn’t really a waitlist. From what I’ve seen, that’s pretty standard for precious metal watches from a smaller AD that doesn’t stock those and has to request them. Anyhow, plenty of your critiques of Rolex are valid, so carry on...

Thanks for the encouragement...;-) For the record, it's the biggest AD for Rolex in Switzerland... Go figure...

Hello forum, new member here…;-)

To come right to the point I was never particularly interested in watches and for the last few years I was only wearing smart watches because I was into analyzing the data a lot…

Then, all of a sudden this changed and I started thinking that at well over 50 I might need a real watch for a change.

So after spending a lot of time on the different watch blogs and forums I decided that the Daytona WG was the one watch that ticked all the boxes for me. I liked the looks and the fact that it doesn’t depreciate even though it’s quite a substantial investment.

So I innocently walked into the local AD only to discover that to get that kind of watch you have to be a very patient person… Which I’m not. And the more I read about the mechanisms of the Rolex way of doing business the more I felt that this brand is not for me. And on top of that I discovered that now that I’d started to pay attention to what kind of watches people were wearing the ones that had a Rolex were in most cases easily categorized as posers… Now I know this is a huge generalization but that was just the impression I got.

Long story short; I’m still on the waitlist for the illusive Daytona but in the mean time I have acquired three beautiful Speedmasters and even if the call from the AD should eventually arrive I think I will pass on it… I’d rather wait for the Snoopy LE due in 2020…;-)

This is not intended to be derogatory to any Rolex owner, but for me personally they won’t get any of my business. Especially since I learned that even the largest AD chain in my country is selling their stuff to the grey market to make a nice profit…

Hope you enjoy my small collection!

Cheers!

Lovely collection, happy to see you on OF.

Agree completely! I do appreciate what Rolex once was. I don't appreciate what Rolex has become.

I was in the Army when you could get a discounted sub at the post exchange - under $1,000. At that price point they certainly made sense.

To me, wearing a Rolex today (for a majority of owners perhaps - certainly not all of them) is simply about wearing a piece of flash jewelry. Very different proposition.

You can still get Omega at a reasonable price and use the thing like there's no tomorrow.

@griffith_500, you couldn't come here and just talk about your collection of speedmasters? You had to do the gratuitous slam of Rolex and those who wear them as posers.

Enjoy your Speedmasters.

Yes, because this is the whole purpose of a forum... A place to share information and stories...

I‘m sorry that you have a problem with my personal opinion and I appreciate your comment.

My experience with Rolex is the reason that I have Omega watches in the first place therefore I have included that part.

So the more you read about the mechanisms of Rolex (whatever that means), you decided Rolex wasn't for you. But you're on a waiting list to buy a Daytona. Even though you've concluded that the people you saw wearing a Rolex are posers, will you be one when you get your Daytona?

Sorry if my english is not good enough for you...

If you read my initial post again you will notice that I said that i will most likely not take the Daytona and rather buy another Speedmaster. I‘m still on the list just to see how long it takes to get one. Nobody gets harmed by me doing that.

I assume you are a Rolex owner?

Get it if you can, it‘s such a cool watch... I love the yellow accents on the watch and band...
Also compared to the two others it‘s extremely comfortable to wear. The manual movement makes for a thinner back side.

Welcome home and nice Trio - I have the Grey Side of the Moon too, and would like an Apollo 8 as well. But I'd recommend a regular Speedmaster Professional manual wind as the 4th Omega in the future.

Machinations of Rolex is what it should have said.

Greetings

The far right one with Omega caliber 9900 Co-Axial Master Chronometer is very nice, indeed.

I hope that some day I will able to buy it.

I am a former Rolex owner, and although I don't get all worked-up over the current shortage, I do recognize that it's really gotten out of hand and it has soured me on the brand. I will venture to presume that most Rolex owners bought them either as a recognition for a life milestone, or received them as a gift, or to go well with their Bentley (although maybe the Breitling would be a better choice...) and not because they are watch enthusiasts who appreciate the quality and craftsmanship. Poseur may be a bit strong as a generalization.

I sold my last Rolex because I was able to make a significant profit on it, and ... oh, woops, that was not the last one. The last one was a WG Daytona that I just didn't care for, and had to nearly give it away since no one wants a WG Daytona unless it has that stupid ceramic bezel.

Now that I'm back in the Omega family (with a SMP and Speedy) I'm debating the value of spending (if I could get one, which I can't) $7500 on a new submariner versus around $5K for another Speedy, or $2K (each) and get a few used ones. The latter option seems like a lot more fun.

I'm on the list at my AD for the sub, but last time we spoke he just laughed and said "don't hold your breath".

I'd consider looking at these Omega's too:

Seamaster 300 - These look killer on nato's
Aqua Terra
Speedy 57'

Just so you know, as a Rolex owner I took no offense to your post. Some people seem to want to be offended at every little thing someone says these days...

Yep, a lot of us here are also Rolex owners who didn't get offended, [to the OP] because we know that "the people you saw that had a Rolex were in most cases easily categorized as posers…" That is a huge generalization, but that was just the impression that you got. (to quote the OP)

Now, in my case, that isn't my impression of ANYONE here on OF, but you haven't met all of us here yet to know that. Who knows, maybe the meanest of the bunch here don't own Rolex at all?
