What is a fair price range for a good condition original black face seamaster? Assuming one ever comes up anything like as nice as the ones above!

Please come here and ask for opinions before you buy your next watch.
I will! I've only just discovered this forum and it's amazing how helpful everyone is and how much I've learned already.

Here is an example of what to avoid (bad redial, though black and gilt):

Thank you to you both: it's just as useful to see what not to buy as what you should buy! What about something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Omega-Au...184593?hash=item2ae4db0211:g:xnEAAOSwCEhefMGL

From a seller who has several for sale and honestly describes it as a refurbished dial? Is refurbishment considered a definite No No amongst experienced collectors?

This seller mainly offers redialed watches, but at least normally he's stating that the dial is refurbished.

These redials are of better quality, but they're still redials.

For me, the dial (along with the hands) is the most important part of a watch and something you look at all the time. I personally say NO NO to redials, while I love spotting them... 😉

Yes this seller is well known for black ‘refurbished’ Seamasters with ridiculous asking prices. The sad thing is he occasionally manages to sell one.
He could choose any colour for the refinish but goes with black as he knows there is a premium.

Hi David,
I also stumbled across this seller in my early days looking for my first vintage, and was excited by some of the watches, I got some great advice on here and here is a thread about the seller I created when I was learning in case you're interested:

I agree with you, though I know it will make my search even more difficult! I've started reading up on the meaning of reference numbers and serial numbers, but I guess I now need to educate myself on hands (and someone said buckles too!)

Just read it, very helpful, thanks! It shows you can't necessarily judge by the glossy web pictures of watches or premises...

Glad it helped! I definitely dodged some bullets thanks to everyone on here and their huge amounts of experience, including learning the right questions to ask! I was luckily & got my first Seamaster via OF so keep your eyes peeled 😀

There is, of course, another alternative.

If the redial is really good and all you care about is wearing the watch and not selling it, in other words, "not being a collector", feel free to buy one and wear it! Plenty of people wore redials for years, knowingly or unknowingly, and didn't care.

It's only from the collector perspective where it matters. As for price, only you know what your tolerance is. The open market will be different than the collector market, because a collector will wait years to pay the riight price for the best piece.

What the hell was I thinking, letting that go?

Funny I think that every time I wear it, you even serviced it and cleaned it up for me 😗

If you ever feel the need to sell it, don't forget me.
