Beware eBay “authenticity guarantee”

Long story short, I’ve been on eBay 22 years with thousands of transactions and dozens of high dollar watch transactions. Never had an issue. In April I bought a “genuine” watch for $4000. Went through authenticity without a hitch. Watch arrived and I immediately sent to manufacturer for service through my local AD. Manufacturer sent watch back and said we won’t touch it because movement is not ours and neither is dial. I reported to eBay and they denied my return (even though seller offered returns). Provided eBay letter from manufacturer pinpointing all the components that make the watch a fake. They do not care and are refusing to honor their “guarantee”. In short, the guarantee is anything but a guarantee. Seems like a slippery slope for eBay. Unfair and deceptive trade practices to lure unsuspecting customers into buying watches that are not genuine. Buyer beware

Not surprised. Their “expert” is the last word. Never mind that no one can possibly be an expert on every watch from every manufacturer.

Once it is opened by anyone, it’s yours. eBay is very clear on that.

Frankly, I would never spend $4,000 on eBay for anything and I’ve done hundreds of transactions there with very few issues.

PS - Can you tell us the brand of the watch and who you sent it to?

I’ve been surprised by some of the unfortunate experiences people have posted about regarding ebay’s authenticity guarantee so far, but this is next level surprising (to me anyways). I’m also curious what brand of watch this happened with.

fully agree. i am trying to limit myself to $2000 for ebay transactions. having said that i have been sucker for the seemingly rare watches on ebay, especially when impulse buying at the time of sleep deprivations :0

There was another thread on OF not long ago from someone else who was sold a fake on eBay. I'm so wary now about buying second hand watches off eBay, despite being sorely tempted by some offerings.

You've been posting this message throughout the day on several forums with several hours in between but you do not provide anything of proof.

Show the original listing, show the pictures of the watch you received, show what you received from your AD/service center etc.

I would also like to know who these authenticators are?
Who vetted them to be watchmakers? And what keeps them from being total scum bags who can easily swap out dials and movements…
In my opinion, I would rather do my own research on a watch buying from eBay and ask for detailed pictures,Provenance and paperwork. If I have any doubt at all in my mind about authenticity when purchasing a watch on eBay or any of the forums, I simply pass. I’m not interested in a Seller sending it to a third person For verification. This is not a service I’m interested in and I have no choice in the matter so I will not be buying any more watches on eBay

You won’t have to search very hard or far on the forum… This exact topic has been discussed at length. It’s not a secret who these people are.

Very scarey, personally I could never bring myself to buy something that expensive on ebay.

The existence of an (unreliable) authenticity guarantee just means that, as before, you must do your due diligence before purchasing from there, just like anywhere else.

Thank you, I just found out how to find answers to my old messages and/or answers to threads I am in... I knew I responded to another thread and googled this but didn't find that answer. Thanks again!!
