Be careful out there

Just a follow up note here. The bodycam footage was released and has been publicized. It is pretty horrific in that my cousin was clearly not armed, and while he did approach the officers when he probably should not have, there were seven officers and one of him, so hard to understand why they felt unduly threatened or why they shot him.

Watched it - tragic. He didn't really threaten them or raise the "knife" (aka plastic fork) so it is puzzling why they felt the need to shoot him at nearly point blank range. Police will investigate themselves and find themselves to be free of any wrongdoing...of course...🤬

As a resident of Los Angeles that video certainly doesn't make me feel safer. 🙁 😡

Sorry again this has happened to your family.

Again, very sorry for your loss. Tragic. And for the record, no one hates a bad cop like a good cop. Every profession has their questionable characters. This line of dangerous work is no different. I surely wish there had been a different outcome. I don’t believe that for a second in this anti-police society( right up until someone needs one) that this will get swept under the rug. We have great LEOs in this group of fine people. Let’s not paint all with the same brush.

You have hit all the standard talking points. Congrats. I could go into detail on them all, but this isn’t my thread and my loss, so I’ll just keep it short.

For the record, again this one is not my loss, but I had a good friend executed by police with no repercussions, so you will have to forgive me for not seeing things the way you do.

I know not all cops are bad, and in fact one here I consider a good friend. When I see these good cops intervening in the actions of bad cops, instead of just standing by like I see so often now, I’ll maybe feel differently...but I’m not holding my breath.

Fair. I’m sorry for your loss and can’t imagine how tough that was on all family and friends. Peace brother.

Unjustified use of a firearm. A taser or baton should have been used. I hope this case will be referred to the D.A.

Just finished a shocking day during which I learned that my cousin, a young man, somewhat troubled but super gentle and sweet, and very bright, with an engineering degree from a very prominent local university, was shot and killed by the police a couple of days ago. Not looking for sympathy, but just sharing and making a public service announcement to be careful out there. I called my son and told him if he’s ever stopped by the police or interacting with them, just to hold his hands in the air with his palms and fingers open. No real explanation for what happened yet, although the police claim that my cousin was threatening them with a stick. Ultimately, I imagine we will see the body camera footage, but that will not change things. Thanks for indulging me.

This all sucks. Glad you got the bodycam footage, I was going to say you could always issue a FOIA request as bodycam footage is publicly accessible. The headlines, seem fairly typical, once you describe the situation. Police and their PR and their indemnity ... hopefully your family gets some sort of justice or peace at the very least.

As a side note, non-native speakers do not know what is meant, if a police officer says "freeze"

That is just horrifying. The “weapon”.

@calalum I didn't have the heart to like your original post as I was reading it. The police felt threatened with a plastic fork! Seriously? No words for your loss. The bodycam footage is there and all, and the law will also take it's course; but I can't imagine this helplessness of the situation to be in as family member. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. Think the police had better training in the old days. In the 1970's I hung out with the wrong crowd you hang out with dogs you get fleas. I delt with the police a lot due to long hair and the people I hung with remember being with these so-called friends we get pulled over, so I am in the back seat trying to hide a bag of weed the cop thought I was going for a weapon he was trained right did not shoot me he told me latter I almost died over a bag of weed they took my weed and let us go. Gave up that nasty weed habit a very long time ago the US Navy taught me that habit was not good for me.

Read this a while ago really tragic and sad. While it’s true almost any item can be used as a weapon I’m just thinking why the officer didn’t have access to a taser, or maybe he did and I’d question why this officer didn’t use something non lethal.

As I pulled in my place the town is doing some road work so they have a couple cops doing traffic. I went over to speak with one I’ve know for a while and I couldn’t help but notice a new addition to his already military looking belt. Turns out they are using a bean bag type non lethal weapon that knocks you down and winded, probably hursts like hell but better than a bullet. It’s a pilot program I don’t think the whole town force has it but these type of options while not perfect and can present their own “overuse”. I have my own issues with the militarization of the police along with some constitutional “stuff” but I’ll leave that in my head.

Just a tragic thing and sad it happened must be overwhelming hitting close to home. There was just a paper published on police shootings since 1996 it was interesting as it didn’t line up with a lot of the talking points I hear it was written by an African American academic I think out of Cornell. (He stressed he was African American.

Anyway sorry to babble on too much free time at the moment. It’s such a big topic but in the end it was a sad way for a gentleman suffering from illness to pass. I hope “justice” is found and peace and healing for the family members.
