I noticed a 300m local to me being offered on eBay a couple of weeks ago.

The description was vague, only that the original owner had bought it in Vietnam in 1969 when sent there as a National Serviceman, the photos were a 3/10 and the seller had only sold kids clothing etc.

I called the owner and arranged a viewing with the intention of checking the movement etc so that I could justify AUD$3000 if it stayed under the radar.

Unfortunately on the day I was to visit him, the watch had a bid on it so I couldn't proceed with my plan as technically/morally, the watch belonged to the bidder.

I had a few discussions with the owner and established a great rapport (both being ex military Vietnam era). He had some offers to buy but I suggested he let the auction run (probably to me detriment) and see what the final outcome was.

He said he'd be thrilled if it got to $3,500, but I told him to wait and watch the last 10 seconds of the auction.

He is now over the moon, the watch realised $7,400, over double what he would have settled for.

I didn't win it but I'm just as elated as Roscoe is and happy to have helped him to a great conclusion ::psy::

Thanks for posting this thread @JimInOz . I also watched the last 10 seconds of this auction and was surprised that it cost me $2,000+ AUD more to buy this piece than I had expected. Now I know that the seller had a learned coach! 😀

I'm pleased the funds as headed toward a deservant Veteran. My wife and I visited Australia and New Zealand recently. It was a wonderful vacation. Of special interest was learning more about the epic military tradition of these fine Allies.

I'm also pleased to have an OF confirmation that this is truly a one owner watch. I also hope, as the seller stated, that this SM300 looks better in the flesh than it does in it's EBay listing. 😀

Regards to all from New York and looking forward to receiving this Big Triangle No Date!!

No worries, it was a story that needed to be told, and it had a happy ending.

Just sent you a PM.

Cheers

Yep, had my eye on it as well. It looked pretty fine, and I am pleased that he got a good return. I deluded myself that the price would be lower than that. I have a few better photos than he put up on the ebay site. I really dont know why he didnt put these better ones in.
