Typically, you would closely inspect the dial to ensure it hasn't been wiped and redialled. You'd research the reference to ensure the dial came with the hands and the crown matches the reference. Then it comes down to the specific watch, seller, and sales conditions, shipping details, cost, etc. That's how I authenticate and consider the watches I look at buying.
