One-handed or two-handed backhand? Seems like the one-handed backhand is getting rare.

When I first started playing 9 years ago, it was 2 handed. But due to the arthritis I have, my neck has about 10 degrees rotation either way of center right now, so getting turned to line up a 2 hander was difficult. I could rip it cross court easily enough, but down the line was not possible (if I turn my body to hit down the line I can't see the ball coming).

I switched to a one hander (which was not an easy transition), and things improved - it allows me to be effective with a more open stance and hit in either direction. It's almost always a slice, but I continue to work on getting over the ball and hitting top spin from the backhand side. The slice though is very effective, in particular when hit with pace right at your feet on the baseline. 😀

Being a Federer fan for many years, I'm a huge fan of the one hander when watching tennis, but as you say it's getting rarer these days. For a while there in the last couple of months there was no one with a one handed backhand in the top 10 - that is the first time ever I believe. With Tsitsipas back in the top 10, there's a one hander back in there now.

So you took the game up a little later then? Nice that you didn't let the arthritis stop you from playing, not easy to change playing style. I started at 14, but haven't played seriously in about 30 years, except for the occasional outings with friends. Always a one-handed player, course two-handers were much rarer then.

You're right about Federer...one of the best that ever played imo. Always got a kick when he did his SABR.
