Agree! But then, so have my "worst" purchases ... But nothing beats the feeling when a punt in the dark turns up a real gem!
Fortunately my ratio of bad purchases have gone down over the years. Key is to not spend more than one can afford to loose.
The fun is in the educated gambles. I have a pretty good track record with crappy photos from the Iberian peninsula. Each one of these was a bargain, but also a leap of faith: Wish I'd kept the original 2-megapixel photos.
One of my all time favorite scores. The case dents was professionaly repaired. The rest was just a matter of cleaning and some TLC. Or this one. Yes all the other shit in the first picture came with it..., Ladies Omega my ass!!!
That was one hell of a result Anders - they obviously had some big women back in the 60s My best scores in order of acquisition are: Zenith el Primero A385 - untouched case and seller didn't know what they had. 18k rose gold Tissot 33.3 with the very scratched crystal removed - I still have to clean off the silver paint to see if the rose gold hands are underneath. Once again the seller didn't know what they were selling. And of course, this year's score, the Big Orange, for which the Big Z are currently having a new crystal made - as long as I let LVMH in Manchester fit it for me, It should arrive in February. One of those "If you don't hit the BIN button, someone else will" moments, even if the price does make it look like it is too good to be true.
Newest acquisition. Cyma chrono, probably late forties with Valjoux 22 movement. Photo doesn't do it justice looks great in real life, very slight age to the dial.
This cal. 354 came in today. Although it's not as bad in person as on the image, the dark area at the 4 o´clock marker annoys me a bit. No chance the dark is removable, right? Happy New Year to all of ya´
It probably isn't. But I think it's a great dial nevertheless. I just say DIBS (so, if it still annoys you...) A Happy New Year to you and all the other members on OF.
and with less than 1.5 hrs to go to the New Year, I've sealed the deal for one of my grails! Now I have something to look forward to in the New Year!
That spot will come right off... along with the paint and script. Leave it alone and and enjoy... Looks great.
This is a looker I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding someone to take it off your hands if it bothers you too much.
eBay sirens called me to push outside my comfort zone. No idea what I was thinking. Zenith circa early '60s. Will post better pictures when it's in hand. 40T caliber.
Just bought this Leonidas from our Scottish friend, Alpha. Looking forward to its arrival. ( The pic and wrist are his. )
Aye that's a Scotsman's wrist right enough. A public thank you to Allan and to those who don't know he is a really nice guy and I say that before the celebrations start
