Excuse me, but that sounds like a watchmaker with little belief in his own skills馃槻 ? I would say you should just find a better watchmaker!
He appeared concerned over the brittleness of the plexiglass should he exert too much force. Depending on whether I'm able to return the watch, I might end up convincing him to give it a shot.
I am uncertain what to think of that. If that is the way the watch is designed, then it should be routine to open it. The plexi would in worst case need to be replaced. Is it signed Longines in any way? If not then a generic plexi in the same design would be a few pounds to replace.
Or am I missing something here??
I'm guessing he's might have bad experiences with other customers in the past on this topic - I'm easy on the plexi, and like you said, a generic plexi shouldn't cost much. Any tips on where I could possible get a generic plexi replacement?
Not intending to be nosy, but if your watchmaker does not know, then you really should find another one!
Depending upon where you are located there are several places to source these. There are literary thousands upon thousands of different sizes and shapes. A watchmaker should know his way around in that jungle.
Pity the cal 291 longines on the right is probably go back to the seller - the watch was not working upon arrival and my watchmaker is not keen on having a go at prying the plexiglass to get to the movement. 馃槨
There's only 3 seasons on your planet? 馃槣
Sounds fishy to me. There are a LOT of front loading watches out there and this means your watchmaker can't work on ANY of them. PM me before you ship that back.

My watchmaker just broke plexiglass in my French Connie when he tried to take out the movement. It is a real risk. However if replacement available, your Longines is a very awesome piece of vintage watch to have.
